Ariz St starts women's lax and triathalon, PAC12 will now sponsor W Lax
Ariz St just announced today that they will sponsor women's lax and triathalon. Might be the first women's triathalon team at the college level. These will be the Title IX adjustment sports when Ariz St added men's hockey.

The six PAC12 women's lacrosse teams are:

Ariz St
Cal
Colorado
Oregon
Stanford
USC

Denver, SDSU, Fresno St, St Mary's and UC Davis will have to recruit one more WLAX team to the MPSF.

Colorado St is adding women's lax, so the MPSF will still have six teams.

East Tenn St is the only other DI school that has women's triathalon. Four DII schools and two DIII schools have also started varsity teams.

They got a grant from USA Triathlon to help them start their triathlon program, which the NCAA classifies as an "emerging sport" for women.

http://college.usatoday.com/2015/05/16/v...e-changer/

Quote:In the 2012 London Olympics, the United States failed to capture a medal in the women’s triathlon event, but USA Triathlon CEO Rob Urbach says that will change next year in Brazil.

USA Triathlon recently awarded eight U.S. colleges and universities a portion of a multi-year, $2.6 million grant intended to develop varsity triathlon teams, and Urbach believes that the growth of collegiate triathlon will strengthen the Olympic pipeline.

“It is an absolute game-changer to be able to compete at the NCAA championships,” Urbach says. “It is a watershed moment in our history. You will see immediately the depth of success that people have over the next few years.”

The eight schools who received the grant — Arizona State University, East Tennessee State University, Black Hills State University, Drury University, Queens University of Charlotte, University of West Alabama, North Central College and Concordia University of Wisconsin — can now recruit and grow a triathlon team with support and initial funding from USA Triathlon.

I'm all for women's triathlon. Another way to get women participating in varsity collegiate athletics. Which is exactly the spirit of title IX.

Costs would be higher than cross-country, because of the bikes. But overall would still seem to be fairly minimal costs.

Why don't those six just become affiliates of PAC w lacrosse?

That's what the WWC did in wrestling, with the XII.

ASU has a great set up for Triathlon (BTW - everyone is spelling it wrong...) - several are run in Tempe, with the Tempe Town Lake right there for swimming.

Getting the grant - didn't hurt that the only member of Congress ever to do an Ironman (and she does several triathlons a year), Kyrsten Synema, teaches at ASU.

The Pac 12 has 6 lacrosse programs, the Big 12 did not have 6 wrestling programs. My guess is that since Colorado State is coming on board, thus preserving the MPSF's automatic bid, the Pac could split with a clear conscience. They'll all play each other in non conference play anyway. The MPSF's alignment also works because the California teams can make one trip to Colorado and pick up two games in a long weekend. I would also not be surprised to see the Mountain West take this off the MPSF's hands, especially since Lacrosse isn't actually an Olympic sport.

I could see Triathlon eventually being sponsored for both men and women at a number of colleges - it has virtually no capital requirements, unlike Track and Field.

As far as the Pac 12, they need to get two more of their members each to add Field Hockey - California and Stanford are playing in America East along with UC Davis (Big West) and Pacific (WCC). Ideally the Pac 12 could get six schools to sponsor both Field Hockey and Men's Lacrosse, which wouldn't upset schools' Title IX balances. There is also a shiny new NFL stadium in Santa Clara that would probably be interested in hosting the NCAA Lacrosse Championships as well.

Would like to see a few more PAC12 schools start ice hockey rather than lacrosse as it has more upside, but also has a higher beginning hurdle.

Don't think men's triathlon will ever be introduced because of Title IX. How many college men's volleyball teams are there, even though it's an Olympic sports and there are foreign pro teams. Question if women's triathlon in colleges would ever result in Olympic medals, as those athletes tend to be older and have had a lot of life experiences. College is great prep for sprinting and field events, but don't buy it for marathon and triathlon.

Apologies for misspelling triathlon. For some reason have always put the extra A in it when speaking.

I agree that it's unlikely a triathlete would go straight from college to winning an Olympic medal, but I think the idea is not that, it's to get more women into the sport at a younger age so as to develop an eventual pool of Olympic-class triathletes in their 30s. Having the "carrot" of college scholarships out there has been a big incentive in other sports to developing top junior athletes.

Butler is adding Women's Lacrosse as well.

Which conference they will be in?

Could the RMAC be a conference be brought up as a whole? They have Lacrosse that could help the PAC 12 out in a long run to get a Western Lacrosse programs going on the west coast. Denver could then be an affiliate in RMAC instead.
