MAC QB's top 5 in the league... and GO!
To keep this in its own thread as seems like many other threads keep deflecting into this topic ... might be nice to get everyone's take here...

Here's my TOP 5 in order:

1 - Matt Johnson (BGSU) : Pretty much leads EVERY statistical category in the MAC right now... over 70% completion and over 800 more yards passing than the next candidate. System or not, kid is getting it done. He's been sacked 22 times and still only thrown 3 INT's to 24 TD's... Far and away the #1 QB in the league at this point.

2 - Cooper Rush (CMU) : This one is a close call with Zach Terrell. Both are near identical in completion percentage with Cooper leading by one percentage point 68.5 to 67.5. He's thrown for 500 more yards than Terrell and has a slightly lower over QB rating. Right now I give Rush the nod as he seems to be forced to throw the ball a bit more at this point.

3 - Zach Terrell : Second in overall QB rating only to Matt Johnson, Zach has dipped quite a bit in attempts and total yards as WMU seems to have found a different way to get the run game going... They aren't leaning so heavily on the jet sweeps this year and thus his numbers have dipped a little. Still holding a solid 67.5% completion rating is no joke...

4 - Derrius Vick (Ohio) : After watching him last week its hard for me to even put him on this list. However, leading up to that game he was playing some of the best positional football for a QB in the league. He's holding the 5th best percentage and the 4th best overall QB rating (over 5pts above Drew Hare). I give him the nod as he seems to be a little more elusive out of the pocket than Hare.

5 - Drew Hare (NIU) : 4th best percentage at 64.6 and 5th best rating at 139.3. He's thrown for more yards than both Vick AND Terrell, however he leads both in attempts (Vick by 38 and Terrell by 15).

It must also be noted that its easy to rise to the top of this category when you lead the league in attempts as Matt Johnson does... but 45 more attempts than the second most in the league... Johnson has thrown the ball 305 TIMES! Zach has attempted only 191 passes this year...

I based this primarily off of completion percentage, and QB rating... taking into account that just because you throw the ball a ton more, doesn't make you better... see Blake Frohnapfel... he's 9th overall in pct and 8th in rating... he's thrown the second most passes though... 260 (tied with Rush).

Just my two cents.

From an NFL Standpoint
Rush
Frohnaple
Terrell
Elly
Johnson

Johnson is listed at 6 feet, which usually means 5'10 1/2"

He's thrown for 500 more yards, but he's played 1 more game. So yeah, it's REALLY close. Also, they have no running game at CMU. However, if he can keep the same completion % without a running game, the tie-breaker goes to him, if one wanted to get technical. One would also want to factor in INTs, though with that considered + running ability.

I'd go (in games back format):

-- Matt Johnson
2 Cooper Rush
2.5 Zach Terrell
3.5 Drew Hare
4.0 Derrius Vick

Not impressed with Elly. He may be getting better, so a few games more may put him up. He didn't have a D1AA game set in to spike up his #s, but then again, didn't have a bye either.

The difference in Rush vs Johnson and Terrel.

Johnson is a system QB that gets a lit of run after the catch off from quick bubble screens. I watched the UMass game and he threw a ton of them. Because of the pace of the offense defenses have a hard time adjusting and he does move the pocket. Terrel has two great receivers to throw to who can get both runs after the catch and can stretch the field.

In Rushs case everyone knows he's going to pass. His receivers are not overly fast. They can only stretch the field in blown coverage. But he is very accurate and Threads the needle with a lot of passes in tight coverage. As a passing QB it's not even close.

If UT, BG, or WMU lost their QB they'd still win games. If Rush goes down they win nothing.

BG's offense relies far more on deep routes than bubble screens. You should probably take a look at Johnson. Dude's got a strong arm and is deadly accurate wherever he slings it, especially deep.

Also, Johnson was the second best QB in the league behind Lynch in 2013 in a completely different system, that of the conservative Clawson. There's a lot of evidence to conclude he is NOT a product of the Babers system, even if you don't quite understand said system.
