I thought the same thing when we played them. I'm very impressed and think Charlotte is a really good addition. Also, glad to see USM back and doing well. Congrats.

Thanks. And y'all will be fine. Transition after losing a lot/moving up will take a little time. I think Charlotte and ODU will be middle of the pack next year.

I appreciate it, and I definitely agree.

App's success in the Sun Belt this year came up at our tailgate.

"But it's the Sun Belt, guys." I said with a slight slur. "We'd be on the cusp of bowl eligibility in the Sun Belt."

I may have been drunk, but I don't think I was that far off.

Even in C-USA, I honestly believe we are a QB away from being a decent - if not good - team. This was apparent on Saturday... about midway through the second quarter I noticed USM in a cover two, and realized that it may have been the first time in the entire game that USM lined up with two safeties.

Seemed to me like USM decided that they were going to give us the pass, and stuck with that until we were so far behind that our only option was to throw the ball. Worked perfectly.

Some other observations from Saturday:

-Your band was good. Would have been great if they hadn't effectively ruined Star Wars for me. If I hear the Imperial March one more time I'm going to shove a thermal detonator into somebody's tuba. Towards the end when they started to play - then sing - then play again what I assumed was the fight song, those who remained in my section just kind of looked at each other and gave that silent "damn, that's cool" nod.

-First half USM was a damn lucky team. No idea how the first scorer kept his feet... from my view, it looked like one of those hits that knocks the ballcarrier three yards back and the ball five yards away... and he kept his feet. Very impressive. Then, the second TD was a "look what I found!" tip. Don't take this as any slight to your team... a wacky or improbable score counts for no more or no less than a dominant drive, but it did give me some solace. I actually felt like we could fight our way back until...

-That kickoff return. That, in my opinion, was the game changer. I felt like Lee's touchdown could have given us some momentum, and the game had somewhat of a Gardner-Webb feel to it (we came back from a 28 pt 4th quarter deficit to win). Then, that return ruined everything.

-Most of all, this was a "pinch me" game. I grew up watching USM play the SEC schools all the time (my dad went to Bama) and I usually rooted for them. I always liked and respected USM. Seeing my alma mater take the field against them was special.

Thanks for the kind words. As I've said before Charlotte will be an awesome atmosphere once the stadium is renovated and the traditions take hold. It'll take time.

The Pride of Mississippi has always been one of my favorite bands. They have their own demeanor and style when it comes to the music and music selection that has been formed by the traditions and proximity to the Mississippi Delta and New Orleans. The Imperial March or "Nasty Bunch" (The cheer we do on a third down stop) has been a blessing to hear this year- we haven't heard it much over the past three years so I'm savoring every moment of it.

The play and then sung "Southern Mississippi To the Top!" (fight song) isn't really done much after scores back at home games. I assume it was done so not to play while the game is going on. They normally do it during the Fifth Quarter concert where they will play, sing, and then play again to finish the fight song.

My favorites are always "Rejoice Southern!" (Glory, Glory Hallelujah) which they do after each home game- it's much more fun when we win, and the borrowed-from-SWAC/LSU tune "Neck" (It's great with the lyrics the student section yells). Also, after the final home game of the year they do one of the greatest renditions of "Amazing Grace" that you will ever hear.

Back to football-- I thought Charlotte played well, especially for only being in the CUSA this year and only having a team for such a short period of time. Your Running Back is top notch and could easily play on any power five team, in my opinion. He's a strong down hill runner with some shifty moves. I had to scratch my head at some of the decisions that your quarterback made and then the subsequent throws that were made were not as accurate as they needed to be at times. Overall, Charlotte has the facilities and the money to succeed. As long as your coach recruits well, Charlotte will be competing week in and week out in no time. Best of luck!

Neck isn't an LSU tune. It's a big song HBCU's have played across the country for a while now, that's been widely adopted because it's frickin' awesome. It was one of my favorite songs I played in the ODU band. It's always interesting when we play Norfolk St. or Hampton, cause at some point the song comes out, meaning the other band has to respond with their version. It's always good fun.

it's my only knock on D right now (over pursuing).....especially with our OLBs.....bad decisions are still being made in the lanes....

regardless....this D is pretty damn good.....getting better every week.....

No. Not a game changer, but the stat geeks who vote for all conference will see his stats minus 75 yards and a touchdown.
Phillips really has been remarkable this season and I fear his season will be overlooked due to our record.

Jalen Richard keeps playing the way he is, and nobody should be ahead of him when it comes to voting.

Gotta disagree with that. Phillips has 500 yards in CUSA play already (with an awesome 75 yard touchdown called back). He's done his best work in conference.

We don't have a QB. We have some players we trot out and put in that position, but none of them are good enough to earn the title of actually being a QB.

Definitely. I mentioned the SWAC which is mostly HBCUs. I didn't know other schools outside of the SWAC/LSU did it so that's why I only mentioned those two.

I noticed that last season at the conf hoops tourney. When one band would do neck. The other band always had the head nod going and would sing with them. About 2 time outs later you could count on the other band to do its version.

When talking about our band you must {begin sarcastic font} realize our school of music is so astute that it once kicked out a young man because the faculty felt he had little talent. Hummmm

I've watched that play numerous times now. The first TD was bad tackling by your defense. The defender was in great position, but instead of wrapping up, he threw a shoulder into our WR. Mike just bounced off and then headed toward the endzone.

The tipped ball for TD was nothing but luck. We've had those type things go the other way the past few years. It was nice to have some luck go our way.

I want to echo some the sentiments above, I grew up in SEC country as well and Southern Miss was one of the teams you feared if they were on your schedule. I am ecstatic that my alma mater is in the same conference with them, and it is almost unbelievable that we are hosting a program of that caliber in our third year. You guys are a classy bunch of fans, and I loved that you brought your band to our place.

I wish we could have made it more of a fight, but it was your day, every time it looked like we might make a game of it you brought us back to reality quick. Good luck with the rest of the season, and I can't wait till we make our first trip to Hattiesburg.

That was pretty pathetic, that worked against FCS squads but it won't cut anymore.

A lot of that probably had to do with the angle from which I saw it... probably looked like a much harder hit than it really was from where I was.

I don't have the time - nor the stomach - to go back and dissect replays of the games. Seeing a loss once is enough for me.

The art of tackling has suffered greatly. There was a play in this game where our best defensive player, D'Nerius Antoine, went up and tried to stop a Charlotte runner with just a hit instead of wrapping him up and tackle him. These days when I see a defensive back wrap up and make a good tackle, I definitely notice it because it is the exception instead of the rule.
