The issue is voluntary movement. He didn't have to take a knee.
That isn't the issue. He should have been able to take a knee without it being a safety since the momentum of the kick carried him into the endzone to begin with. The rule is different on interceptions, and I know they spot it where the ball is caught. In this case the refs might have thought his momentum didn't carry him in, but it looked like it did on the replay - of course the camera was some distance away. Even the announcer assumed it was a touchback when it first happened.
That was an old school MAC announcer in the Michael Turner era who did the play by play for the Miami game. I at least thought he would know the name is not Galloway.

He also pronounced the Lewis on the back of TLL's jersey as "Beebe".

Or most people that watched the play.
Most people don't know the rules either. When I think of a dumb play I think of the stupid late hits out of bounds we had for so many years. Or a false start inside the opponent's 5 yard line or perhaps 3 in one game. THAT's way more stupid.
That's why I said I felt bad for him. This was a bit circumstantial.
Yea that's all I'm really saying, even if the ref's call was correct it was pretty close and not a hard mistake to make. What usually happens is the player hesitates, wondering if he needs to take the ball out, decides he better do so to avoid a safety, and gets tackled at the 10 yard line.
There's also usually somebody telling them to come out or not (the other returner that doesn't catch the ball). I don't remember if anybody was signalling to him or not. So it's not as simple a play as a lot of people might think.
