NoDaks- abbreviation of state name, uniforms prior to 1935 used to say NoDak
North Stars - popular but it is the state nickname of Minnesota
Rough Riders - informal state nickname, breaks wild horses or a member of Teddy's Roosevelt cavalry. Teddy credits the state who his becoming a man.
Sundogs - ice crystal rainbow around sun on very cold clear days, professors like it

If Rough Riders wins, will UND make a bid to place the football team in the CFL?

They're far enough north to be annexed by Canada, so you never know. I wonder if it was North Stars, would they have a logo similar to a certain NHL team of the past.

If I were eligible to vote I would probably boycott the poll. But FWIW I slightly prefer Nodaks. Unique; has some links to UND's athletic history.

Anyone from Indiana. My understanding the term was popularized in the early 1800s with a combination of the words "who's" and "here". Basically frontier gibberish.

Here is why I like NoDaks:

- In my opinion, the true choice that UND alumni and fans would make is to just stay as "UND". That allows them to keep consistency with what they've been doing the last few years and it also doesn't technically "replace" the beloved Fighting Sioux nickname.

- But that last part is exactly why they are being forced to explicitly pick a new nickname, as part of the settlement.

- So, NoDaks is the least amount of change from just being "UND".

Unfortunately, I can already see the "nickname" that opponents (particularly from NDSU) will call UND, if they select NoDaks.

It's not family appropriate, so I won't post it explicitly here.

At least that's better than Sooners, which takes its name from homesteading and is another way of saying land thieves, squatters, lying cheats, what have you.

Every team has one of those. I actually see the word "Kodaks" as a slanted variation more.
