Nick's Pick Week #7
49-14 YTD...let's see how we do this week.

Any thoughts or comments out there on these picks below?

Toledo 45 - EMU 17
Just when you count Eastern out they usually come back and play a terrific game in a contest you'd think would be a blow out. While Toledo has dominated the series (leads 31-11) EMU has had their moments in the past decade of putting a scare into UT when the Rockets were heavily favored. Toledo will win but there may be more of a struggle here than what Kent State put up last week for no other reason than EMU has a better offense than Kent.

Ohio 26 - Western 21
Western proved me wrong last week Bronco fans so you probably like this pick. OU is quickly proving to the be class of the MAC East and setting up for a very special season. OU has not won the MAC since 1968 and this year, should they stay healthy, may just be there best chance in nearly 50-seasons.

Central 34 - Buffalo 23
A bounce back game for the Chips at home while UB is coming off of a bye. UB put up 500-yards of offense against Bowling Green two weeks ago and ran 96 plays in the process. That won't happen against this CMU team who may look to running the ball more this weekend after their season-high rushing effort last week in Kalamazoo.

NIU 45 - Miami 21
Freshman QB Billy Bahl began his baptism by fire last week at Ohio and should be more comfortable this week after seeing what DI-A football is all about. NIU has some work to do in order to build up a quality resume to receive one of the MACs better bowl bids later this year. NIU's offense may now be finding a grove.

Akron 38 - BGSU 34
A slight upset here as Akron has found their QB in Thomas Woodson. Look for the Zips to run...run...run and then run the ball more to keep BG's potent offense off the field. The Zips played very well and very physical at UL-Lafayette a few weeks ago and will bring that same type of game plan to the Doyt. Why isn't BG QB Matt Johnson receiving any sort of Heisman press? I know the MAC doesn't have much of a national following and many in the MAC News Media are pathetic at best with their local coverage...but this guy is putting up video game #s right now and someone should be taking notice.

Ball State 42 - Georgia State 14
This is the type of game the Cardinals needed after playing Texas A&M, Toledo and NIU to date. G-State is not a good team and if the Cards win by anything less than three TDs it should be considered a bad game for them.

UMass 37 - Kent State 17
A classic tale of a really good offense (UMass) against a good defense (Kent State) coupled with a very bad defense (UMass) against a ridiculously poor offense (Kent State). Go with the Minutemen.

Do you think BG will stack, stack, stack against Akron's run, run, run?

Wow, you see Ohio as the THE Mac East team, and BGSU as not the king of the East and it being a "mild upset" of Akron beating them? Yikes! Ballsy picks!

I don't think it's ballsy to pick Ohio over WMU, being at Ohio -- but it's a game a bettor would pass on, especially picking Ohio to beat the spread on them in a favored game!

Their defense is like a reverse EMU, looking at the stats: They're good against the run, but can't stop the pass.

RE: Nick's Pick Week #7
If BG loses Toledo will jump to 80% on every game at least via Massey ratings. Probably not good for the MAC. Would make any loss we had look worse, and hurt our second highest media trended team. Would also make Memphis' narrow win a little less assuring. Supposedly Akron has a fine defense that could be capable of slowing down BG. If UB almost had the falcons, why cant Akron? 3 way tie for MAC east with an OU loss to BG and each dropping a game to the West???

Buffalo didn't 'almost have the falcons' though. They scored a little bit late and the weather was pretty lousy that day. The final score was not indicative of that game. BG was clearly the better team.

That being said, Akron can certainly make a game of it and can win. It's the MAC after all.

I definitely wouldn't have predicted Akron beating BG. Ohio/WMU was tougher and I wouldn't have expected a WMU blowout.

No. And OU WAS favored. An all too familiar result for Solich.

There is a huge difference in the level of competition that the two teams have played this year. WMU is a lot better than they would appear at first glance when looking at their record. Ohio is good and they will win most of their games in the East, but they are not at the caliber of the upper half of the MAC West.

The west re-established the recent dominance, at least against teams other than BG.

I am assuming that you are talking about this year only with BG and are not including last year. If so, than so far you are right, but BG has not played anyone from the west yet. We will see next month when they play at Western and then against the current MAC top dog, UT a week later. Their last game against BSU should be a shoe in, but I never write off the Fighting Testicles......they are upset kings.

Last year BG didn't have Matt Johnson, completely different.

I thought he was the starting QB, in the Western game last year.

Just looked it up. You are correct.
For some reason I thought he did not get injured until later in the season.

BG's D has been better than last year too. Great stat, last two games, Johnson has 10 TD's and 11 incompletions.

He was hurt near the end of the first game @ WKU last year.

RE: Nick's Pick Week #7
Yeah, Matt really didn't play last year. I was still surprised with BGSU's new coach and their backup winning the East.

I KNEW BGSU would be one of the most powerful in the MAC with Johnson back this year, and they are.

#1: Toledo -- Because their D is #1, their O is Good now
#2: BGSU -- their O is #1, their D is creeping toward moderate
#3: NIU/WMU/CMU -- I hate the last team but I have to be objective
#4: Ohio/Akron/Kent -- Kent's the dark horse. They have basketballs on their football field to jive things up.
#5: Buffalo -- Adjustment Puberty to a new system & different coach. They'll be powerful in a year or two
#6: UMass/EMU/Ball State -- See ya UMass. EMU was better at basketball than you were this past year. Bite me. BSU down here because you lost to Georgia State. REALLY?!?!
#7: Miami-OH -- How could you guys go from King of MAC in early 90s to roofies in every glass of water? Not good man, not good.
