Game Thread: UTSA @ Southern Miss - Saturday
I looked a couple pages back before I started this thread, so if one has already been created, then my B.

Looking at the numbers, I feel much, much better this week about USM's chances than I did against Marshall. The main reason is that it's at home, and it's Homecoming. Another reason, is that UTSA is not nearly as good on defense or special teams as Marshall. UTSA is a lot like Marshall on offense, i.e. not explosive, tight end is the leading pass catcher, etc.

Another thing I also noted was that 4 of UTSA's leading tacklers are safeties...And anyone will tell you that's not a good sign on defense when multiple secondary players are making all the stops.

Mullens has a 15:4 TD/INT ratio, while UTSA is at 8:8 between three QBs. It seems as if UTSA has a FR taking most of the snaps, and he is susceptible to fumbling (4 times) and being sacked (11), and he is only averaging less than 6 yards per attempt.

IMO, this game will be more about USM and their execution than UTSA. If USM does what they have done on offense, outside of the Marshall game, then we should win by 10-17 points. If we lollygag around and let UTSA hang in there, then this could be one of those head-scratching USM losses that we are all too used to seeing.

The weather should be beautiful, and I look for a great time at The Rock on Saturday night.

I have you guys winning by ten. I just don't think the meep meeps will be able to get to Mullens and therefore, Nick will have time to find a target.

Furthermore, that's a great observation regarding the defense. When you have players in the secondary leading the team, it means that either:

a) You blitz every down
b) Teams are gashing the d-line rushing and are successfully passing the ball.

I certainly hope our red zone play calling improves this weekend.

Why doesn't Monken and Lindsey have a red zone offense built around Matthews at qb. I am talking especially from inside the ten yard line. Nick is a solid qb, but face it, as Marshall showed, he is slow and no real threat to run. Meanwhile, we have a 4 star qb, who can motor and throw, sitting on the bench and has gotten zero chances to prove what he can do. I am not saying Matthews should replace Nick, but in the red zone we need to do something. If the Marshall game didn't prove that, than I don't know what will.

There was a game in the Bower era where Chris Windsor come out of nowhere to run for 4 TDs. So I kind of think that sort of thing can work.

Ailrick Young would come in sometimes inside the five when he was backing up Favre.

That or a package with one of the skill position guys that used to be a QB in high school (therefore is a threat to throw and run). I couldn't believe we got inside the 5 twice against Marshall and scored zero points. That just cannot happen.

Not a great analysis of UTSA by the OP to be honest.

-Comparing stats when most of them come from OOC play can be misleading. We didn't play Austin Peavy or Texas St.
-FR QB Bogenschutz is likely out for the game with concussion symptoms for the second consecutive week.
-SO QB Dalton Sturm is the guy you want to look at, walk-on that started his first game last week and played admirably vs La Tech.
-TE David Morgan II leading the team in receptions is not a bad thing, NFL player and 1st Team All-Conference most likely. Capable of lining up wide as well.
-UTSA DLine is a strength not a weakness. Starting DEs might give your slow OTs problems.
-Passing Defense is improving but still a weakness, which is concerning since So Miss does a good job of flinging it around.

I've waited for the this game all year. I attend USM and I've backed UTSA from day 1. I will be sporting a UTSA jersey with a USM hat.

thanks for sharing - I was looking for the game highlight but couldn't find one from Tech side. It is fun to rewatch all of our bad plays (or your good plays in this case).
From our game against UTSA:
- UTSA's run defense is good. UTSA's gameplan was to stop our run and they stopped our run effectively.
- UTSA's front 4 are pretty good both on D and O. After your walk-on QB settled in, the Oline gave him enough time to throw the quick slant over the middle. Tech got burned twice in the 2nd half on pretty much the same play. I don't think UTSA has any threat on the long/deep ball.
- UTSA's QB can run with the ball

Marshall just gave everyone a blue print how to beat USM by disrupting USM's QB play. We will see if UTSA can copy it.

If UTSA gets good QB play, it's going to be tough for USM to win. I think that's the key to the whole game.

This is probably the most talented team UTSA has ever had.

Well, at least he won't be wearing an Ole Miss or State shirt while at the game....if USM doesn't turn the ball over like last week we win by 3 td's., but.....

Both teams have shown some flashes of brilliance, both have a legit shot at the division.
This one could narrow the field a little in the West. That said - 6-2 will probably win this division so it's not an elimination game yet, either.
Will be keeping an eye on it for sure.

This game is pretty important for Todd Monken and his attendance rants. In the last two homecomings we've been outscored by a combined margin of 118-31.
