You check their accreditation through http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/ or you contact the school itself for its accreditation... then you check on the legitimacy of the accrediting agency. No high school counselor worth a darn should ever let any student sniff an unaccredited college.
I've worked in two fields where not having an accredited undergrad/graduate school transcript keeps you from getting an interview. Why waste your money and time?

RE: NBR: University of Phoenix on probation for alleged recruiting violations
How many public high schools in Alabama have NO full time Guidance Counselors or only one, maybe two, for all four grades and perhaps are shared with other schools during a week? Since they are responsible for running all the standardized testing for all four years, they may not be able to be "worth a darn" in knowing the accreditation of on line schools.
EX: Our senior class GC at WEHS had no problems with the FCS schools that our athletes generally attended. Then when Quinton Reece was signed by AU, the D1 "clearing house" refused a Math 11 course he had taken which had been fine with the lesser schools for years. Reece had to return for one year to WEHS for an acceptable math class and reenter AU the next year. Athletes at schools that regularly go to D1 schools are not likely to have such a problem.
