Maryland President Wallace Loh: "We're in the Big Leagues Now"
http://maryland.247sports.com/Bolt/Maryl...w-40207220

Quote:“The choice of the next coach is going to be absolutely critical,” Loh said in a meeting with The Baltimore Sun’s editorial board. “The question becomes, what kind of coach do we want? I think [Anderson] said a coach that plays an exciting brand of football -- wide open, that has the personality to relate to the kids, the personality to project himself well (to boosters, media) … You have to have an outsized personality here. It’s not just knowing the X’s and O’s.

“That’s why you have the Jim Harbaugh’s and Urban Meyer’s,” Loh said, referring to two of the biggest names on coaching, who the Terps have to face on a year-to-year basis.

“We’re in the big leagues now. It’s about football; the Big Ten is not about basketball,” Loh continued. “We have significant new revenue stemming in and we’re going to have an indoor facility … We can have a decrepit Byrd Stadium -- you only use Byrd Stadium five times a year or so -- [but] those kids use an indoor facility every single day. What draws them here in the indoor facility, not Byrd Stadium. With the Big Ten Network and that exposure, and of course the connection to Under Armour, I would say that this is one of the most attractive jobs in the country for somebody that’s ambitious and willing to take risks.”

I like most of what he has to say. UMD is a basketball school but that doesn't mean we can't take football seriously. Calling Byrd decrepit...not awesome.

For the Big Ten allegedly not caring about basketball, they do alright as arguably the top basketball conference.

Haha...I thought that as well. He probably could have said that in a different way.

I would hope it's not about basketball when determining who they hire as the next football coach. 01-wingedeagle Lots of dumb right there. 07-coffee3

Glad to hear there is a definite committement to football. The administration support is a much bigger deal in football success than I think it's really made out to be.

It is the one thing that for the momement has switched me from predicting more Rutgers success over the next few years to more Maryland success.

At this point, it is just wait and see. Who do they hire? How much do they spend? The thing I am going to be looking at is the all the assistant coach/position coaches. How do they do there and how much do they pay. That is where I think you may be able to say yes they are committed or no they aren't. I think they are going to be walking a fine line. Have to pay all those good coaches but also want to make sure you get your money's worth. UMD still working on its financial issues.
