Spurrier Retiring
I think Beamer should listen to the things that Spurrier said.

RE: Spurrier Retiring
Say what you want about Spurrier, but when he went to the SEC as head coach at Florida it was a running-back league. He came in with that crazy pass happy offense and he changed the SEC for the better. He was dominant whether you liked him or not.

Anybody talking about how Spurrier quit on his kids before the season was over?

RE: Spurrier Retiring
I think what Spurrier did makes total sense. He knew if he waited until the end of the year to leave, none of the current staff would get a shot at the job. At least this gives them half a year to prove themselves.

RE: Spurrier Retiring
If Jimbo wasn't known as the HCIW, would you have had a problem if Bowden decided to hand the reigns over to Jimbo in the middle of his last season when FSU was 2-4 and had just lost a home game to GT? For big time programs, the effect on recruiting is significant.

Oh and that season had a home loss to South Florida as well.

RE: Spurrier Retiring
People also forget if it wasn't for Tommy Bowden resigning 6 games into the season at Clemson, Dabo Swinney is probably never the head coach at Clemson. The truth is Spurrier quit really trying about 3 games into the season. He could have continued to just go through the motions before quitting at the end of the year or quit now and at least give the assistant coaches a chance to prove something since they actually have something to coach for.

Quiting is quiting.

I bet Spurrier's pre-game speeches did not mention/suggest that his players quit in the middle of the second quarter.

RE: Spurrier Retiring
So you're not denying he quit?

He literally said, "I'm resigning, I'm not retiring." He's willing to take other football jobs, just not his current one at SCar.

Oh I agree he quit, if you read my response I even said as much. I just understand his reasoning, like I said he really "quit" a few games into the season, so I actually give him credit for acknowledging this and saying "hey I'm not really trying right now anyways, let me step aside and let someone on my staff actually try". I'm personally not a big Spurrier fan but I really don't have a problem with him doing this.

I never said he didn't quit. I just said I see the reason why he did it and it makes sense to me.

RE: Spurrier Retiring
Well then I don't see the point of this discussion if you agree he quit on his team.

The man is 70. At some point in time he was going to have to get out of the way. He chose a route that would guarantee his staff an opportunity to prove themselves. He also chose a route that would keep him from dealing with the embarrassment of not going to a bowl. I prefer what he did vs coaches that hold on way too long. So I agree that he quit, but I think he quit on himself more than the team.

I guess there wouldn't be any point if you believe that it is always and absolutely wrong to quit/resign, no matter what the reason.

We were just adding more to the discussion. You said he's a quitter, we agreed that he was but added that it was the right decision to make. People quit things all the time (in sports and in life) so in this instance it's not as if Spurrier's particularly unique.

This, and to his credit he admitted as much during his press conference. He said that he was the problem so his solution was stepping aside. He even admitted to basically lose interest during the UCF game so he really hasn't been trying since the 4th game of the year. If this was a coach at my school, I would prefer the guy to at least being honest about it and step aside and not drag the school down further, that doesn't help the players. The player's deserve a coach that cares so in this instance I would say what he did by quitting was better than sticking it out and going through the motions.

Spurrier resigned for his players & the team. I actually gained respect for him for putting the players/team above his own ego. This will give the team a better chance to win & help recruiting. Other coaches should follow suit.

Not me. It added to my dislike and disdain for the man.

He could have quit in March or next December, but no, he walked out on his players in mid-season.

Pathetic behavior by him and a lousy example for others, including his team.

When he said he'd listen to other jobs but that he was done with SCar?
