RE: Spurrier retiring
Over the 40+ years I've been watching, the biggest competitive development in college football has been the paradigm-shift from being a run-oriented to a pass-oriented sport. And while that development has several sources, Spurrier is surely one of its original founding fathers.

As a coach, I first remember Spurrier as the HC of the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits back in 1983-1984. Even then, he made the Bandits fun to watch with his wide-open style of play.

RE: Spurrier retiring
Mark Bradley of the Atlanta paper a few weeks ago predicted he would retire because he would tire of losing. But he didn't predict it mid-season.

I hope he's not having health issues and if not, someone gets him in a booth.

RE: Spurrier retiring
Maybe the AD or boosters were pressuring Spurrier to announce that he'd retire at the end of the season, and he decided, f that, if they want me out I'm leaving now.

I would suspect health issues. He would want to go out with a win I would think. He's got Vandy next.

His retirement is effective immediately. I don't think he'll be coaching the Vandy game

RE: Spurrier retiring
Lot of parallels between Donald Trump and Steve Spurrier.

Brilliant, entertaining, all around jerk.

I don't think college football needs such jerks as coaches. He's got a whole school. The Stoops brothers, Leach.

So glad to see him go, but certainly don't wish bad health issues on him.

That's why I said it was probably health issues. Otherwise, he would have deferred it some.

My first thoughts were that either he or his wife (Jerri) might indeed be facing a health issue. I just don't see him stepping down this way unless it's something serious.

RE: Spurrier retiring
This is the supposed interim coach

http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...e-spurrier

Quote:According to a police report, two officers saw Mangus "facing Main St. urinating on the street curb and roadway," at 1:31 a.m. ET Tuesday in Greenville. The report stated that another officer was called to the scene and when he approached Mangus, the quarterbacks coach was "unsteady on his feet and he had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person."

The report also stated that when the 42-year-old Mangus was questioned by the officer, Mangus' speech was slurred and he failed to provide the officer with "straight answers." Mangus was issued a ticket for $470, handcuffed and taken to the Greenville County Detention Center.

I think there is something to what someone said earlier about him getting let known that this would be his last year, and he said f that.

Well, there's no point in conjecturing further. What you say is possible. It will all out soon enough.
