I feel like "ruling" isn't the correct choice of words.

I know a lot of people have a hard time buying in to UNC, but I think they are legit this year. The took a decent Illinois team to the shed. If you look at the rest of their schedule it's very possible they can win out. Their offense has always been good when Williams keeps his head straight and their defense is much better this year.

I took the whole "UNC and Duke are going to start ruling the Coastal" to be a longer outlook than just this season.

I would have to agree with that. There is little question, IMO, that Duke and UNC now have the easiest remaining path to the Coastal championship this year. That happened because this year the four southern schools are pitted in a round robin, leaving the others with a relatively easy crossover slate. That won't be the case again for a few years.

But the way the divisions are set up, the Coastal is always going to be up for grabs, with no dominant team and no sure outs. On average, the Coastal is equal to the Atlantic, but at the top and bottom they certainly are not.

We immediately start projecting everything from the Heisman Trophy race to the national championship race to the various conference championship races.

Then, when our predictions are proven ridiculous - because we made them waaaaay too soon - instead of just acknowledging that we were wrong and probably shouldn't have been wildly speculating before we had any actual evidence to support our guesses, we start to make all kinds of qualifiers to justify our idiocy.

Rinse. Wash. Repeat.

Who's going to win the Coastal? I have no idea and neither does anyone else. If I had to guess I would pick Duke. However, it could also be North Carolina or Miami or Pitt or someone else. That's part of the beauty of the sport – it's complete unpredictability.

Except, we are pretty durn sure neither Virginia or Georgia Tech is winning the Coastal.

I'm pretty dadgum sure VT ain't, either.

Decent enough. 4-2 with a win over Nebraska and a close loss at Iowa.

When your signature win is over a 2-4 team are you really considered decent these days?

Yes. Nebraska has lost 4 games in the final seconds.

Illinois will probably be a 7 win Big10 team, so I would say that's decent, if you prefer the word mediocre I will use that. So UNC has a 34 point win over a mediocre Big10 team, which is about the same level of most of the teams UNC is facing the rest of their schedule, minus maybe Duke, so I think you can see where I get my prediction as a very real chance to win out.

I think GTS should be drinking a lot to all this talk of UNC legitimacy. I'll believe it when it happens. Not until then.

Speaking of VT and the original premise of this thread...

VT vs. Miami -- loser does NOT win the Coastal. The winner might finish in a 4-4 first place tie.

Winner of the Coastal is not losing 4 games.

Bizarrely, even after looking like the same load of crap against Clemson, the Sagarin has GT winning out. Yes, that includes FSU and UGAg. And the ESPN FPI has GT winning every game except UGAg. WTF?

A pile of warm, steaming crap, to be more precise.

Especially FPI. I mean holy F balls, what a joke of a statistic. Not even ESPN employees respect it.

What Marge said.....

Both Sagarin and FPI have USC in the top 10 even with 2 losses. I don't need to provide any more evidence.

Isn't the FPI just a list of SEC West teams? 07-coffee3

If we list the top 11 schools of the FPI, it includes every SEC west school, Michigan, UF, and then 2 more SEC west schools.

They are crap at this stage of the season, as Sagarin will readily tell you. They aren't meant to be used this early as head to head predictors. By the end of the season, they are as accurate as any other measures we have.

It's ok but it's heavily biased towards the SEC. Case in point: 7-6 Arkansas finished #10 in last years Sagarin.

We have to visit Pitt, Duke, AND North Carolina. That will be killer. We always suck against Pitt, and UNC seems to be super pumped to play us and I'm pretty sure the players will not be that hyped. Duke is Duke at football and we are not that level (proven capacity). Maybe if we beat Clemson we will have a chance (it is at home, after all, so maybe) but I'm just not sure about anything anymore.
