Toledo's Back up QB
So, I was hoping Toledo would have an opportunity to play a back up QB with a lead. It always makes me nervous having the starter in the game with a big lead and a defense embracing the "If we can't beat you, we will beat you up" mentality.
In strides Michael Julian, and he did a really nice job. What a change from last years entrance against KSU. The QB depth last year after Ely and Woodside was at that point obviously very limited.
Michael looked much more comfortable. He did a nice job with the ball. He had a big run, and man does he throw a nice ball. He has a nice arm, and I am wondering if the coach put him in against KSU to put last year to rest, or is he the #2. I fully expected to see Woodside.

He is the #2 unless Ely gets hurt. We are redshirting Woodside if possible

I read somewhere they are hoping to redshirt woodside. I think it's a smart move.

Julian looks a little awkward running, IMO, but he sure covers ground. Threw only one pass so far but it was a beaut and a great catch. I wouldn't mind seeing an occasional series from him, or use him on a wildcat play. We tried a couple trick plays yesterday that failed miserably-he might add that dimension to the O without the concern of fumbles, etc on reverses.

The Kid can punt too. He bombed one against Arkansas that out kicked the coverage, where he had to make a play and was held on the tackle attempt.

He ran on a very good 4x400 relay team so I guess he can run.
So if Woodside redshirts, how long is our stud freshman QB (Guadagni) supposed to hang around?

Woodside and Guadagni RS, then compete for number one next year if Ely isn't back. If Guadagni transferred after a RS year he'd have to drop down a division or go another year without playing, correct?

I would assume it will be open competition for every position.

I agree, I would think competition, but with an understanding of the experience that is required. Ideally you would always have a Junior/Senior QB that knows the offense well and has already started a game or two due to injury to the starter, or has at least played quite a few snaps in mop up time. Next, you want 1-2 understudies in the wing that you "know" or at least "think" can be your next starting QB if the starter goes down this year.
Assuming Ely is out next year (haven't heard the latest), they will transition from Ely to Woodside (RS JR) as the starter next year. He is 100% ready right now, and is a more mobile QB than Ely. If he has become a better passer, even if by a bit, he will be a very good QB for us next year. My guess is that they are thinking that Guadagni (RS F) has 4 years to play and Woodside has two. If Guadagni is good enough to be the next starter, he'll still have to sit 1, maybe 2 years as the backup (#2) or understudy (#3). If he is that much of a stud, he would start as a Soph RS over Woodside (in his senior season) giving him 3 years at the helm. If he is better than Woodside even then, we will have a really good QB on our hands. If he is good enough to start over Woodside this next coming season, we would likely have a true prodigy QB on our hands. We haven't had a prodigy QB like that in recent history. I will welcome it, but I won't believe it until I see it! (giving Woodside some props here because I think he is a pretty good QB and we wouldn't miss that much if Ely came out).

Good to see Michael Julian get into the game and run the offense effectively. It's important to give reliefers out of the pen some real game work.

Is there reason Michael Julian is being left out of the discussion of who QBs next year? He seems athletically quite capable and as I recall, he's a brain. Runs well. Throws a nice ball.

Saw all I needed to see last year at NIU. It was his moment to shine. Next man up and he played like a deer in the headlights until he he got hit in the noggin. I felt like he was relieved.

Julian came in with a lot of hype and a number of offers but he quickly fell to the number 3 spot in the three way QB competition for the 2014 QB job and for whatever reason he failed miserably to live up to that hype at NIU when he got his chance.
However, this is all about "what have you done lately" and so far in his mop up appearances this year he has looked pretty good, especially against Kent.
I would expect another open competition for QB next year, if for no other reason than to establish the ranking on the depth chart and I would expect him to be in the mix.

Woodside is going to red shirt this year. As long as Ely does not get hurt.
