Quote:Sarkisian Terminated as USC Football Coach

Here is a statement from USC athletic director Pat Haden:

"After careful consideration of what is in the best interest of the university and our student-athletes, I have made the decision to terminate Steve Sarkisian, effective immediately.

"I want to thank Clay Helton for stepping into the interim head coach role, and I want to add how proud I am of our coaching staff and players and the way they are responding to this difficult situation.

"Through all of this we remain concerned for Steve and hope that it will give him the opportunity to focus on his personal well being."

He was coaching at USC for quite a few years before being hired as their HC. In all that time, did nobody notice that he had a drinking problem? When somebody gets tagged with the nickname "Cutty Sark", you have to think somebody was putting two and two together.

I hope he gets a quick recovery from his addiction and move on with his life. He will eventually get a HC job, a G5 school will take a chance on him. A school like UTEP comes to mind.

As a former UCLA fan, it's fun to watch all the drama that USC has been involved in since Pete Carroll left. Same with Texas. I respect both institutions a lot (academically), I just can't stand both fanbases.

I wonder what the informal investigation revealed that shifted the story from leave of absence to termination.

IMO it was make that move or Haden got fired. He may yet be asked to resign in the near future. A bad hire carrying so much baggage with it - so publicly - won't go over well in Pasadena.

My guess is that it came to light when he was in that state in public situations. As an asst, you are not in those situations nearly as often, and is probably easier to hide. Especially spending time on the road recruiting.

RE: [split] Sarkisian
I'm guessing the difference was probably more a timing thing. He showed up drunk and they decided to put him on leave and took a day to look over the dollars and consider. After that, he was fired. When there's cause (and it is not just because the team is bad), you need time to consider things.

IMO, a bad USC hire will go over very well in Pasadena, because that's where UCLA plays their home games. 07-coffee3

RE: [split] Sarkisian
Steve was not a bad coach. Just a demon of booze abuse that can strike anybody. The players may have given Steve the respect.

It is something that I went through in high school. I was on the boys basketball team as a manager, and our coach was fired in the middle of the season because he was arrested for being involved in a scam. He was one of the Norman High most win coaches of all time, and just a little scandal took him down. The boys lost faith in the team after that and started losing, and some quit the team. We never regroup until after I graduated when they won again. The firing of the head coach can cause mental issues with the players, and we might see USC lose more games this year. USC was starting to turn around this year, but with what happened could destroy what was built.
