UCONN vs UCF Rivalry?
Why is UCONN manufacturing a rivalry game? Shouldn't these develop naturally?

RE: UCONN vs UCF Rivalry?
It's not unheard of.
Penn State - Michigan State - the Land Grant Trophy
Penn State - Minnesota - Governor's Victory Bell
Cincinnati - Pitt - River City Rivalry
All manufactured rivalries. The UC-Pitt one quickly became a real rivalry from our end, but I don't think Pitt ever saw it as one (correct me if I'm wrong).

MSU vs PSU never caught on and I think it was a B1G invention. Never heard of the PSU Minnie rivalry. Pitt and UC was contrived, but I think it was actually developing into something that Pitt fans were slowly coming around to it. But in all of those it was kinda mutual. UCONN/UCF is one sided and UCF seems cool to the idea.

Agree that teams just need to play each other every year for decades, and creating a trophy for a fake rival game does not help make it a real rival game.
Iowa-Neb is another game that they gave a stupid trophy to, and both sides have been kinda meh about the whole idea. Iowa fans look at the black friday tradition as a Nebraska thing. Iowa can take or leave it. Nebraska might as well rotate the black friday game between Iowa, Minn and Wisc. Share it with all the BigTen. Its nothing special to Iowa.

RE: UCONN vs UCF Rivalry?
Rivalries aren't created when a coach (Bob Diaco) says that there is one. Rivalries are created after years upon tough competition and fierce play, creating an identity with students, alumni and fans of the schools. Creating a "rivalry" between two schools that are over 1,000 miles apart, have just played each other two times before and have been a part of the same conference for just two years is just foolish. UCF/UConn may develop into a rivalry, no doubt - assuming both stay in the American for the foreseeable future. But, a rivalry isn't created because a coach creates a trophy for it.
Honestly, UConn should have just slapped that rivalry-name on their games with Cincinnati. At least, with them, they have prior conference affiliation, solid history of games and a closer geography standpoint. Heck, even creating a trophy with Temple would have made more sense.

RE: UCONN vs UCF Rivalry?
To be fair, I do think having a trophy doesnt automatically mean it is supposed to be a rivalry (although most are). Penn State-Minnesota has a trophy because that was Penn State's first Big Ten game and there was never never any real effort to my knowledge to push it as a rivalry. They were never annual oponents.
Now Penn State-Michigan State was pushed somewhat. They were default season ending opponents in the 11 team era and the conference probably felt it made sense to push it a little. It never took off and ironically ended for a few years right when it was becoming interesting.

Yep, I didn't start gaining interest until right before the expansion, I still hate Penn State fans like I hate Michigan fans, but its not that important of a game to me.

UCONN v Memphis would make most sense. Top 2 dogs in conference in basketball. Both usu pretty sorry in football. Lots of common ground.
UCONN v UCF makes no sense.

Could've called it "Snowbird Bowl" and drawn in the wine and cheese crowd. Missed opportunities, man.

I'm pumping Houston's rivalry with Michigan. Great games to be had between the two. Like 50-3 and 61-7. Still great games though.

Yes, it was a lame effort by the B1G to try and "integrate" Penn State into the conference.
Rivalries can't be forced, they either emerge naturally or they don't.

We're a little late on making fun of this, the AAC board was on top of it a month ago. I'd say UConn might not be on people's mind, but UConn is always on Mikos mind.

It was beyond lame. I grew up near Penn State, no one gave a darn about this "rivalry." At least, the charity competition provided some good.

I'm sure UCF will be back up to speed soon, but for now Diaco can make a trophy for the Memphis or Houston game and not tell them about it.

No, we did not. I think we came to respect you and we rooted for you when you were not playing Pitt (urban school thing) but if I am being honest I must admit that we did not see you as one of our rivals.
To be honest, we did not see any of the 2005 additions as rivals. All three programs turned out to be excellent additions to the Big East, but none of them were our rivals. Now, all the schools that left, those were legitimate secondary and third tier rivals. However, from a Pitt perspective, our chief rivals are and will always be Penn State, West Virginia and Notre Dame, schools with whom we have competed on and off the field for decades, not just a few years.

Sure, they are. Colorado placed the Nebraska game in red and said it was a rivalry game when they were part to the Big 8. The game become more important because the coach said it was more important.
