SoCon Point Guards in the Preseason
Ge’Lawn Guyn 6’2” 185 Sr., last full season stats: 19 min., 4.5 ppg on .309 from 3 (29 of 94), .361 from the field, 1.0 assists, 1.0 t.o.'s, 2.0 rebounds, 0.6 steals
Petey McClain, 6’0” 185 Sr., 21 min., 1.6 ppg on .381 shooting from the field, 4.2 assists, 1.0 t.o.’s, 2.1 rebounds, 1.0 steals

At 6’2” 185 with a chiseled body Ge’lawn has 2 inches on 6’0” 185 Petey and better hops. He can really elevate. He’s got more experience defending the best in the Big East and ACC and brings a tough guy Cincinnati Bearcat attitude, although Petey got a few more steals against lesser competition. Neither is a strong shooter, and neither has put up many points, but Ge’lawn is more aggressive going to the basket and getting his shot off. I think Petey has better pure point guard skills. In the full court drills he seemed to have better court vision, pushed the ball up the court faster, often on a laser length-of-court pass, and got the ball into the hands of somebody in a position to do something with it. He may be slightly faster, or it may be a result of effort and ability to see the court that he was making things happen faster. Both have great handles, with a slight nod to Petey based on this short look. Although other teams will have an edge in scoring points from the point, the Bucs should excel in generating assists and forcing turnovers. Petey looks like he’s been working hard – upper body is muscled up – and he’s enthused and confident.

Wofford
Eric Garcia 6’0” 181 Jr., 26.9 min., 7.7 ppg, .360 from 3 (32 of 89), 2.5 assists, 1.3 t.o., 0.7 steals

UTC
Greg Pryor 6’1” 195 Jr., 27.4 min., 11.3 ppg on .379 (44 of 116) from 3, 2.5 assists, 2.0 t.o.'s, 1.5 steals

Mercer
Philip Leonard 6’2” 200 Sr., 27 min., 8.1 ppg, only 1 made 3, 4.2 assists, 1.9 t.o.’s, 0.9 steals

Furman
Stephen Croone, 6’0” 170 Sr., 32 min., 17.3 ppg on .348 from 3 (55 of 158), 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.2 t.o.’s, 1.7 steals
Devin Sibley 6’2” 175 So., 25.0 min., 10.2 ppg on .371 from 3 (36 of 97), 3.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 2.2 t.o.’s
Daniel Fowler 6’4” 195 So., 29.7 min., 7.8 ppg on .324 from 3 (22 of 68) 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.4 t.o.’s, 1.2 steals
John Davis III 5’10” 160 So., 20.0 min., 3.8 ppg, 1.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists, 1.1 t.o.’s
Jonathan Jean 5'11" 170 Fr PG, 2 time Florida all-state
They were second to last in the SoCon in turnover margin and dead last in assist to turnover ratio. So who’s really the point guard here? I have just listed all the returning guards above. There’s room for Freshman Jonathan Jean to move in if he’s ready. Niko Medved had no qualms about playing freshmen last year, even though it cost him in the regular season. It paid big dividends in the tournament.

Western Carolina
Mike Brown 6’3” 175 Sr., 34.9 min., 13.8 ppg on .368 from 3 (42 of 114), 6.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 2.2 t.o.’s
Rhett Harrelson 5’10” 170 Sr., 34.1 min., 11.8 ppg on .379 from 3 (85 of 224), 2.4 assists, 2.4 t.o.’s

UNCG
Diante Baldwin 6’0” 181 Jr., 32 min., 10.2 ppg on .302 from 3 (13 of 43), 4.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.4 t.o.’s, 1.7 steals
Clay Byrd 6’0” 176 Jr., 22.8 min., 5.5 ppg on .321 from 3 (44 of 137), 0.9 assists, 0.6 t.o.’s

VMI
Q.J. Peterson 6’0” 185 Jr., 31.8 min., 19.6 ppg on .277 from 3, 4.9 rpg, 4.0 assists, 3.6 t.o.’s, 1.6 stls
Yes, he’s back on the roster now with his 19 points per game, giving VMI fans reason to hope

Samford
Chris Cunningham 6’2” 185 So., 30.1 min., 10.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 3.9 assists, t.o.’s

Citadel
P.J. Boutte 5’9” 160, GR-Sr. 5.7 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 3.7 assists, 2.7 t.o.’s
Graduate transfer from IUPUI

RE: SoCon Point Guards in the Preseason
I feel like Buc fans have taken Petey for granted primarily for his lack of offense. Solid not spectacular, Petey's been a model of reliability for 3 seasons on defense and with ball handling. He stands in the top 10 in all-time assists at this moment, and could finish as high as 3rd all time. That's especially impressive given that he played under Bartow's anemic offensive system.

Ge'Lawn will get the starting nod this season, but Petey will play an important leadership role this year.
