Big Ten isn't going to totally leave ESPN. And whether you like it or not- Fox can't take all of the Big Ten deal. They don't have the room- and just spare me your **** about FX or FS2. That isn't happening.

Guys, topic at hand here not the Big Ten vs. SEC media debate, seriously.

the thing that'll be interesting is there a level of viewership for FS1 that MLB forces the issue and makes them put it on Big Fox. My hunch is there is some number out there that would do just that.

Just saw today that the Big East title game is going to be on Big Fox rather than FS1.

I don't mean to sound brash here, but the thread is about baseball ... in a college realignment forum. (and it didn't have an "OT: ..." in the title)

So forgive me if I took it a bit off-topic. 04-cheers

That's not me as the board police either, that's just me wanting to talk about the baseball ratings on a personal level.

Now, TBS is having a ratings bonanza. The ratings for the NL games are way up year over year.

Well, I think it's safe to say that there's almost zero intrinsic value that ESPN brings over FS1.

It's almost entirely a function of content. If it's a game that 10M people want to tune into and watch, then the ratings on ESPN are going to be 10M and the ratings on FS1 are going to be 9.999M, with the difference mainly the slightly lower households that FS1 is in compared to ESPN.

In other words, the AL games wouldn't have had any better ratings on ESPN, ABC, FOX or CBS (Network component of NCAA tournament carriage).

FS1 is in 84.3M million homes ESPN is in about 95 million homes. That's a pretty big difference. So you just can't say that it wouldn't have made a difference. And look at football and P12 basketball- get better ratings on ESPN than they do on FS1.

Sorry but to say that people look at FS1 the same as ESPN- is a joke. ESPN will get casual fans. FS1 doesn't.

They don't get the same ratings because it's not exactly the same game in exactly the same situation. Duh

If it's exactly the same game, it gets the exact same rating on either channel. 10M homes isn't trivial, but it is when those figures are so much higher than the number of viewers for the particular content.

Comparable 2014-15 CFB and CBB games in comparable time periods got about twice as many viewers on ESPN2 as on FS1, and even more viewers on ESPN.

Keep on telling yourself that. Pac 12 tournament last year was 1.866 million viewers for the title game on ESPN. The year before on FS1 they had

2013 1.6 million viewers on ESPN
2014 680,000 viewers on FS1
2015 1.866 million viewers on ESPN

Pretty telling there...

Sorry but folks just don't look at FS1 the same way as they do ESPN- as much as you want it to be- that's just not the case right now.

I don't care what data you have.

You can't beat this simple logic:

- if X people want to watch a game
- and X people have access to channel Y and channel Z

The ratings will be exactly the same if the game is on channel Y or channel Z.

Yes and no. Simply because FS1 is on in fewer households, is newer and harder to find because its newer its going to take somewhat of a hit. That being said it shouldn't explain the hit it took on say the Pac-12 tournament from 2013 to 2014.

That's not just what drives ratings.

And sorry but a channel being on 10 million fewer homes would make a difference.

And your statement sums up you in a nutshell. Why let facts get in the way of a moronic opinion.

FS1 is not equal to ESPN. FS1 would admit it...

stever20 in a nutshell.

When he can't think of a counter-argument to the actual discussion, just start shouting random factoids.

RE: FS1 MLB ratings way down for game 1 of the LDS
so year to year real data doesn't mean anything? Are you a ******* idiot or what? With same conference- if game on FS1 gets 680k. Games both year before and year after got 1.7 million viewers. Shows what FS1 is like.

OH and just looked at college football. FS1 has 2 games all season long that have gotten over 1 million viewers. Michigan/Utah and Oklahoma/West Virginia. That's it. ESPN2 has had 9 so far(and those numbers are before last weekend).

Casual viewers also drive ratings a whole hell of a lot more than you think. And right now, those just don't go to FS1.
