RE: Lindy Infante
He was a very famous person for a young student like me growing up in Florida in the early 60's. Lindy played for the Gators in the early 60's when Ray Graves was the coach and the QB was Larry Libertore. All very famous names if Florida athletics. Lindy went to Miami Senior High School and back in those days, the Miami Edison and Miami Senior game was known state wide as the most popular high school game...probably in the nation. When both teams would play....they played in the Orange Bowl and.....filled it up. A good friend of mine and classmate at Clearwater High, Jim O' Donnell, played on that FLORIDA GATOR team too.

I don't remember when, (maybe when Rey Dempsey was hired?), but he was strongly mentioned as a candidate for our head coaching vacancy.

Infante was the offensive coordinator on Richard Williamson's staff in the mid-70's. One of the best football staffs in Memphis history, they beat such schools as Florida State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Auburn and SMU (when they were a national power). There was no fricken "BCS" or "P5" in those days - we were a "Southern Independent" along with South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Miami, FSU, Southern Miss, Louisville, Georgia Tech, etc. and as good as any.

If I'm not mistaken, Infante was our OC under Fred Pancoast.

I think Infante was OC '72-'74 under Pancoast and Williamson began in '75

You are right - I stand corrected. Williamson's OC was Larry VanDerHeyden. Mack Brown was wide receivers coach one year before moving on to a stellar career.

He was a great coach and great guy. Could have been huge at Green Bay. He wanted to draft Barry Sanders but the GM picked Tony Manderich. He was an early advocate of throwing to the RB.He will be missed.

And then we had the Black Boycott! Sure turned the season around!
