NBC Sports and Realignment
Over the past couple of years, there is constant chatter concerning realignment. The conversations always revolve around ESPN and Fox Sports, and rightfully so. However, there is one entity that lost everything and desperately want to get back into big time sports. That entity is NBC. Why have NBC Sports been totally disregarded? Aside from ND football and with all due respect to the NHL, NBC Sports content is extremely lacking. Would they not make a huge push to get a piece of the BTN? With the cost cutting going on at ESPN, wouldn't NBC stand a better chance of getting into the college sports market? What say you?

To be a real player they would need at least one cable channel on the basic tier; can't compete for media rights bidding without (lots of) subscription income.

I believe that NBC makes their revenue from almost entirely advertising fees. How else does a network like NBC create revenue? No ESPN, No CBS Sports channel. Maybe they also make revenue off of relicensing fees from NBC shows as well.

It does have an NBC Sports channel. I have it on my DirecTV lineup.

OK, well that goes to show how well known the sports channel is.

I know that when They thought a bidding war over the Big East with ESPN would pan out, They found out They had no real money to play after ND contract and other programming, and ESPN basically got the AAC/BE rebuild for a song.

Or they thought that the AAC product was not worth much of a bid?

The Golf Channel is a NBC property. If NBC bids it will be a joint bid with Comcast/Charter to leverage their joint cable sports channel.

The people who can actually seriously bid are: ABC+ESPN, FOX (OTA, FS1, FS2, FSRegionals, FSS), CBS+CBSSN, NBC+NBCSN+Comcast+Charter

The only one of those that doesn't already have a major conference is NBC. The one with the most buying potential is probably Fox.

RE: NBC Sports and Realignment
They haven't shown any indication of going that way, with a big splash of rights signings. They're pretty much going the opposite of Fox trying to buy their way into big properties. NBC Sports Net seems to be using "niche" sports that aren't as niche as people think, like soccer and motorsports and hockey to build up a loyal fan base.

The last I've seen, NBC Sports was competing with FS1 ratings better than FS1 was to ESPN, with what has to be a fraction of what Fox has paid to get into the game. I haven't seen any indication that NBC wants to get into the all out bidding war on these hugely inflating rights deals, beyond the Olympics, Sunday Night NFL and ND (which is really not all that expensive).

They could change direction, but I don't see them being a big time player right now. However, I could see them making a strategic move someday. A lot can change by the end of the contract, but I'd like to see the ACC consider breaking out a portion of programming to offer NBC, say 8 football games a year to create double-headers most weeks with ND games, and some basketball thrown in for NBC Sports Net.

To me, that seems like something that might net the ACC a little more cash, something that NBC might be a lot more willing to invest in, and something that might leverage the ND relationship a little bit.

NBC spent a crapload of money on the olympics. Not sure how profitably that has been but I bet they are still paying for it.

They had no other options at the time. It was the only big time event they could salvage after losing pieces of college sports, MLB, NFL and NBA.

Completely forgot about their soccer coverage and NASCAR. Totally agree that both are huge and not so little. The ACC on NBC has a great ring to it; unfortunately, we are tied to ESPN for a while now and I just can't see NBC just waiting to get back into the college game. I can also see a bidding war occur between ESPN and others for the ACC bball content.
