SoCon Post Players in the Preseason
Peter Jurkin 7’0” 230 R-Jr. Indiana transfer. Jurkin looks long, healthy and athletic, but hasn’t gotten D1 game action, or any real game action in 3 years.
Nigel Holley 6’8” 210 JUCO Jr., saw limited action on a great JUCO squad full of D1 talent (Vincennes, 34-3). As a sophomore with 3.3 rebounds and 3.7 points:
Toriano Stokes, 6'8" 230 FR from Memphis Westwood where he averaged 16 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks a game during his senior season. With a 7’1” wingspan and a 9’4” standing reach he has a huge frame, and lots to learn.

There’s not a lot of strong post play in the SoCon. Justin Tuoyo is the best by a long shot. His blocks and defense impact the game by more than his points and rebounds might indicate. There’s no real post after him for the Mocs, except for the 2 freshmen. R.J. White, like Greensboro in general, has done less well than one would expect on paper. 7’1” Fishler and 6’9” 255 Ringer give Mercer a lot of potential.

Wofford
C.J. Neumann 6’7” 230 Sr., 20.5 min., 4.0 ppg on .516 shooting, 4.5 rebounds
Matthew Pegram 6’10” 250 Fr.

UTC
Justin Tuoyo 6’10” 235 R-Jr., 28.8 min., 10.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg., 3.4 blocks
7’0” 252 Fr. Trey Kalina, 6’9” 212 Fr. Jackson White (White, a walk on generally listed as 6'8", says specifically that he's NOT a post and would rather play facing the basket. Most recruiting sites list Kalina as 6'11" or 6'10")
Rather than seeing post time go to either freshman, it may be that Duke Etheridge or Chuck Ester will be the big man on the floor when Tuoyo sits.
Duke Etheridge 6’6” 225 Sr., 12.6 min., 5.3 ppg, 3.2 rebounds
Chuck Ester 6’7” 218 Jr., 13.5 min., 3.4 ppg, 2.9 rebounds

Mercer
Desmond Ringer 6’9” 255 R-So., transfer from South Carolina, 10.4 min., 2.1 ppg, 2.0 rpg; former 3 star prospect ranked 7th in Georgia by ESPN;
Andrew Fishler 7’1” 218 R-Jr. JUCO, at Gulf Coast State CC was a two-time All-Panhandle Conference selection … Averaged 5.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.6 blocks
Niklas Ney 6’10” 260 So., 4.9 min., 1.4 ppg, 0.9 rpg

Furman
Kendrec Ferrara 6’9” 235 Sr., 24.7 min., 7.1 ppg, 4.4 rebounds

Western Carolina
Torrion Brummit 6’7” 240 Sr., 26 min., 11.2 ppg, 6.4 rebounds
Is he a power forward or a post? Most of the time he’s the big man on the floor for Western Carolina
Charlendez Brooks 6’9” 250 R-So.., 8.3 min., 1.1 ppg, 0.9 rebounds

UNCG
R.J. White 6’8” 280 R-Jr., 23.8 min., 11.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.9 blocks, 1.3 steals
Jordy Kuiper 6’9” 250 Jr., 14.1 min., 3.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg

VMI
Phillip Anglade 6’5” 210 Sr., 23.1 min. 8.9 ppg (no made 3’s), 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 blocks
Trey Chapman 6’6” 206 Jr., 21.1 min., 6.8 ppg (17-61 from 3), 3.6 rebounds
Duggar Baucom played without a traditional post last year

Samford
Jamal Shabazz 6’6” 205 Sr., 15.1 min., 4.4 ppg, 3.4 rebounds; not a post but the biggest returning player with any production.
Alex Peters 6'8" 225 So., 9.3 min., 1.1 ppg, 1.3 rpg
Really, who knows who will play here.

Citadel
Brian White 6’8” 205 Jr., 21.4 min., 7.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg
Tom Koopman 6’8” 210 Jr., 7.4 min., 1.7 ppg, 1.4 rpg
Dugger Baucom likes playing ultra fast, without a traditional post to slow him down. These guys are their 2 returning bigs.

How can you not give acknowledgement to VMI's Phillip Anglade?? Dugger played without a traditional post but the kid lead the SoCon in FG% at 60% (all in paint), was 10th in the nation in blocks and was 2nd place to Tuoyo for DPOY ...one of the best players in the SoCon but to you he's not mentionable...hmmm

Swva gave Anglade's stats. What more you want? I think his/her posts are outstanding.

Forgive us we tend to be ETSU centric on this forum.

Sheesh.

Read before you post: Anglade and his stats were “mentioned” and “acknowledged” both here and in my thread about power forwards.

He's a fine player, but that still does not make him a traditional post. The difficulty in trying to separate players by traditional categories is that some players, however talented, can't really be shoehorned into those categories. In the end, I decided to err by being over inclusive.

I figured that VMI fans might be feeling a little frisky since Q.J. Peterson is back on the roster.

They'll be less frisky when they get beat by 22.

Write it down.

When you're a fan of VMI athletics, you've got to find something to get fired up about.

RE: SoCon Post Players in the Preseason
It's been awhile but VMI was competitive in football and basketball once upon a time. They were Socon football champions several times - late 50s, early 60s and had a good run in the 70s. They spoiled the day for Virginia Tech a couple of times in the 70s as I recall.

In basketball they made the NCAA Elite 8 in 1976 and the Sweet Sixteen in '77. They had a player named Ron Carter that played in the American BB league and the NBA (Lakers and Pacers).

I believe they knocked UT.. with the Earnie and Bernie show.. out of the tourney in the first round way back when... They also beat ETSU at their place when we had the team ranked in the top 20.. It's real hard to win there with the Keydets going crazy!!!!

Trey Kalina is now known as Rich Kalina so as to differentiate him from Tre McLean and Traevous Graham (transfer sitting out). Word is that Trey has grown since last year, legit 7-0 in sneakers..6-11 or so out of them. Jackson White will be playing the "stretch 4", he can shoot from outside, being listed as 6-9.

And the entire group will be sitting in stunned silence on the ride home from Asheville.

See y'all soon.

Rich, Trey, and Tre can all stand under the goal if they want while Jackson sits on the perimeter and everyone asks who's bringing the ball down. Right about the time one of our guards is going up for the dunk off the steal.

(In all seriousness, I like how the SoCon posts are suddenly stepping up.)
