Not exactly Georgia Tech's finest hour.

Cumberland ran it up the previous year against GT in the CWS. Heisman also coached the GT baseball team. It was 22-0 Cumberland, and oh yea, Cumberland padded their roster with pros. The moral of the story is clear: Don't piss off John Heisman.

It might be viewed differently if Tech had beaten an actual football team instead of a hastily thrown together collection of random students. This would be like Alabama playing a high school team, except that you would expect more from the high school team because they actually knew how to play the game.

Like I said, this isn't something Tech should be proud of, it's something they should feel sheepish about if not outright ashamed.

If Cumberland didn't want to play the game they could pay the $3,000 buyout they contractually agreed to when they did have a football team. Also, they picked up players from Vandy a few other places on the way.

RE: 99 Years Ago Today
John Heisman did like to run the score up on overmatched opponents, but Cumberland were hardly innocent lambs sent to the slaughter.

You do realize that Cumberland had dropped football the year before. They no longer had a team. The only thing this game shows is that Heisman was a petty, vindictive man.

I know my college football history. But Cumberland tried to pick up players from Vanderbilt, the Southern power school at the time, for the game.

I do agree that Heisman had pettiness in his bones.
