SoCon Power Forwards in the preseason
It’s interesting to consider how ETSU players might matchup against other SoCon players at the same position.

At the power forward position, Benny Lufile is the likely starter for the Bucs. Not every team has a pure power forward. UTC has 2 long 6’5” athletic wing players that get most time at the forward position: Casey Jones and Tre McLean. Wofford’s 6'7" C.J. Neumann is power forward sized (for the SoCon) but plays mostly post. Sawvill at 6'8" might be more of a 3. But here’s what Benny is likely to face:

Abednego Lufile 6’7” 225 JUCO Jr., 26.3 min., 12.3 ppg on 58% from the field, 8.6 rebounds
Closer to 240 with 6% body fat than to 225; showed a great motor and better shooting than expected at open practice
Other possibilities:
Isaac Banks, 6’7” 215 Jr., 18.8 min., 2.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.0 blocks; best rebounds per minute on ETSU
Nigel Holley 6’8” 210 JUCO Jr., saw limited action on a great Vincennes JUCO squad full of D1 talent (34-3 and 3rd place in the national tournament, then 31-2). as a sophomore 3.3 rebounds and 3.7 points. Looks bigger than 210 now http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2014-...holleypd87
Toriano Stokes, 6'8" 230 FR from Memphis Westwood where he averaged 16 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks a game . With a 7’1” wingspan and a 9’4” standing reach, but only 2 years of organized ball. Has increased weight to 240’s since arrival at ETSU

Wofford
Justin Gordon 6’6” 205 Sr., 21.2 min., 7.5 ppg on .547 shooting, 4.0 rebounds
Ryan Sawvell (Evansville TR) 6’8” 215 R-Jr., 15.1 min., 6.0 ppg, 3.9 rebounds in first 7 games as Evansville soph.
C.J. Neumann 6’7” 230 Sr., 20.5 min., 4.0 ppg on .516 shooting, 4.5 rebounds
Cameron Jackson 6’7” 255 So., 8.3 min., 2.4 ppg, 1.6 rebounds

UTC
Casey Jones 6’5” 205 Sr., 29.5 min., 14.2 ppg, only 3 made 3’s, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 2.7 t.o.'s
Tre McLean 6’5” 205 R-Jr., 21.9 min., 4.3 ppg, 3.0 rebounds
Duke Etheridge 6’6” 225 Sr., 12.6 min., 5.3 ppg, 3.2 rebounds
Chuck Ester 6’7” 218 Jr., 13.5 min., 3.4 ppg, 2.9 rebounds

Mercer
Stephon Jelks, 6’6” 225 So., 12.8 min., 5.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg.
They could go with 6’9” 255 Desmond Ringer at the 4, and 7’1” Fishel or 6’10” Ney at post.
But Mercerfan figures Ringer for more of a post player.

Furman
Kris Acox 6’6” 215 Jr., 27.8 min., 7.0 ppg, 7.5 rebounds
Geoff Beans 6’7” 210 So., 21.4 min., 7.8 ppg on .338 from 3 (46 of 136), 2.2 rebounds
Matt Rafferty, 6’8” 215 Fr., 2 time Illinois all-State in high school

Western Carolina
Torrion Brummit 6’7” 240 Sr., 26 min., 11.2 ppg, 6.4 rebounds
Is he a post or a power forward? He’s usually the biggest guy that the Catamounts put on the floor. So maybe he should be compared against Jurkin and not Lufile?

UNCG
Kayel Locke 6’5” 240 Sr., 29.5 min., 12.6 ppg, 5.7 rebounds

VMI
Phillip Anglade 6’5” 210 Sr., 23.1 min. 8.9 ppg (no made 3’s), 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 blocks

Samford
Jamal Shabazz 6’6” 205 Sr., 15.1 min., 4.4 ppg, 3.4 rebounds
Alex Peters 6'8" 225 So., 9.3 min., 1.1 ppg, 1.3 rpg
Lots of unknown new faces here. Not clear who will play.

Citadel
Brian White 6’8” 205 Jr., 21.4 min., 7.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg
Hard to tell with all the new faces (6 freshmen, 2 transfers) and the shift to Duggar Baucom's style who will really be on the floor.

Seniors on above list - be glad you're a senior. Juniors - leave early. Underclass men - transfer. Hanner is going to destroy all of you next year. #SoConPOY2017

Also wouldn't write Lufile in as starter just yet...long way to go with that.

Have added other possibilities, see above.

To my eye, Lufile has the early edge, although Banks looks improved, Holley has muscled up and Stoke has potential as big as his frame.

Another advantage this season is that our PF's will not be burdened with playing out-of-position. They'll be favorably matched and will have Jurkin/Holley/Stokes to count on. Now that we have true centers, I think that'll relieve some pressure on the backcourt too.

I swear I hope Jurkin follows up a block shot with a 'finger wag'. I will lose my mind!

I don't have you-know-who's inside information from dinner table talk, but from the eye test, I really like Bennie and I think he certainly has a wiggle edge. He is every bit of 240. And with our new strength guy he could hit 250 next year. I certainly think he has the genetics.

Bartow would have had the kid at the 5. LOVIN that our guys can play their natural positions this year.
