OK any of you old farts like me experiencing arthritis in your knee?
I had a meniscus tear about 25 years ago and it seems like arthritis has now creeped into that area and giving me some real problems. I have been going to physical therapy for about a month to make the other support muscles stronger but got a set back this weekend when the knee all but gave out as my wife and I were shopping. Now there is a lot of pain and limping around.

Curious to know if any of you guys or gals have experienced this. Knee replacement?

Since you have possibly developed arthritis you should look into medicinal alternatives beyond PT, as well as diet. I have two friends who have had joint replacement. One of them is the knee and one of them is the hip. Both have none of the pain they had before the operation, but both have trouble with cold weather. The one with the knee replacement has been a long time FB season ticket holder (and still is) but can no longer go to a game in the cold (below 40) because the leg and knee area hurt. One is 58 (hip) and the other is 63 (knee). Both are male and both were very active sports wise in their earlier years. Both drank alcohol for many years (lots), both smoke (1 to 2 packs daily), and both are somewhat overweight about 6' and about 250 pounds.

So consult your doctor and look closely at your diet. You might not be as bad off as you might think. You might be able to get by with cortizone injections, which I have had in my shoulder several times in the last 20 years for a shoulder separation. The day after the injection the pain is gone. Not fun but waaay better than having joint replacement I would think.

If you do have the operation, research closely the brand and type of replacement to be used. The friend with the hip joint might have to have his redone because the unit implanted might have to be replaced due to problems with the long term durability. His operation was in 2006.

My friend was considering knee intervention 20 years ago, but decided to go all-out on joint formulas and natural anti-inflammatories. He switches around on the formulas.

But even if you do get replacements, the joint formulas are good. Curcumin (turmeric extract) is great anti-inflammatory, btw. Source Naturals makes a good joint formula too.

Anyway...friend (mid 50s) plays Basketball at the JUCO against kids that are on the FB and BB team in their early 20s..LOL--twice a week..like clockwork. His team wins too. Pretty funny to hear them yell Get the old guy.

I've been living with partially torn meniscus for 30+ years now, sometimes hurts, but mostly not. Thumbs are bad, however, genetics at work.

I am seeing an ortho...got an injection about six weeks ago, worked like a champ for five. Can't have another injection until November. Been going to PT 3 days a week. I think some of the soreness right now is because of the last PT session. Not sure. There has been no talk of replacement. But there was a discussion about an injection that has a cushion like gel to replace the meniscus padding. I couldn't get that until I was diagnosed with osteo, and he said now you have been.

Tough on a guy who still likes to run around, throw the ball, play golf, ride bikes and just getting in and out of the damn car!

I tore the meniscus in my right knee about 20 years ago and had it scoped. I was like new in a couple of days. I would recommend that, if you can.

It was scoped about 25 years ago. totally rehab, got back to playing all sports again, with some limitations. But as I said, I just started having pain and stability issues in the past few months. My doctor gave me a couple of injections that didn't help at all. Sent me to the ortho who gave me an injection that did work immediately.

I guess I am just getting impatient and po'd that I am missing some great golf weather.

RE: OK any of you old farts like me experiencing arthritis in your knee?
My preferences would be OrthoMemphis and Dr. Mike Neel, or Memphis Orthopedic Group and Dr. Riley Jones.

I have always heard that knee replacement is a lot rougher than hip replacement. My brother had hip replacement, and other than St. Francis almost killing him in a botched urinary catheter deal, it was not too bad. He is, however, possibly facing another hip replacement due to the defective implant he got.

I would try all means possible to avoid a knee replacement. Memphis Orthopedic now has a program that puts a lot of emphasis on your feet and orthotics in your shoes to lessen the pain in your knees, hips, back and even neck. That might help your pain. Good luck!

Thanks, I am in the Dallas/Ft Worth area and I am seeing a sports orthopedic surgeon. I don't think it's going to come down to a knee replacement anytime soon. He was pretty sure that all I am experiencing is arthritis setting in where I had the surgery all those years ago. PT and some injections along the way. Just a little disappointed that after several weeks of PT the pain has returned.

I am sure you are in good hands, then. There are also pain specialists that may be of help. Mays and Schnapps are two really good ones here.

I'm seventy three, I twisted my knee a few weeks ago. Went to the doctor and got a shot. The knee pain was completely gone but it seemed to move to the bottom of my foot. I have a hard time walking in the early morning, but it gets better as the day passes. It's always sore but it seems to be worse in the mornings and at night??? Any one have any idea what might be causing that???? I guess I am lucky, other than that I have no health problems that I am aware of.

RE: OK any of you old farts like me experiencing arthritis in your knee?
OrthoMemphis was great for me that 21-17 Best Time I Ever Had cited.

I had a total knee replacement about 4 years ago by Dr. Kenneth Weiss & Dr. Jared Patterson.

My left knee had no cartilage from surgery during HS & was bowing out & causing 4 or 5 discs in my back to press on nerves & became too much to live with.

The results have been fantastic. Although I've given up playing any more basketball after playing in a adult league for over 30 years.

The only negative was a infection on the outside of my knee which put me back in the Hospital for 5 additional days. I'd only been out of the hospital for 2 days when I had to go right back.

I had to go every day 7 days a week for 6 weeks to a infectious diseases doctor to have an IV of antibiotics.

So make sure you ask your doctor in Dallas which hospital has the least occurrence of infections in your area.

Coach Terry Tippett (ECS) had a infection on the inside of his knee after replacement surgery & had to have it ripped out and redone. It also affected his voice causing hoarseness which eventually go better.

Damn! I'm sorry you went thru all that. Staph is running rampant in a lot of hospitals. I lost my grandfather and stepfather to staph, both at Baptist in Little Rock. Just a PSA for anyone in LR.

I've lost one and had another one get it at Baptist East. Absolute worst hospital experiences possible, that place is a hell hole.

I developed soreness in my right heel. Sore in the morning and first steps were painful. Wore off after 5 or 10 minutes. Soreness would come back during the daytime if I had to be on my feet for extended periods. Went to the doctor and he said it appears to be plantar fasciitis. He prescribed a padded like sock which helped greatly. But the soreness was still there every morning, just not as bad as before the padded sock.

I had bought a well known brand of hiking boot several months before the soreness developed. Anyway a long story short, the doctor did ask what type of footwear I wore in the initial interview. I told him I mostly wore the Vasque boots I had on. He said they are a good shoe, just wanted to rule out a bad shoe as the problem.

About 18 months later I decided the Vasque were getting long in the tooth and bought a new pair of boots. As it turns out it was the boots. The pain went away the following morning and has not come back.

RE: OK any of you old farts like me experiencing arthritis in your knee?
So, after all that I eventually had to get scoped again. Took the rest of my meniscus out, down to bone on bone there, also arthritis in there and he cleaned that out best he can.

So now it's back to rehab and the next step will be to put some cement in the bone under my knee for support.

If that doesn't work, hello knee replacement.

The surgery was Wednesday, today is Tuesday and I hurt like a MF although my flexibility has improved dramatically since the first few days after surgery.

getting better every day. Been tough with trying to get the house all decorated for Xmas before Thanksgiving. Got it done but I wasn't much help. I dread the physical therapy three times a week. Seems like I come out of there in more pain than before I go in.

PT sucks. Getting older doesn't help anything. Did you do anything to irritate it?

I have knee problems from an injury in high school and it usually only bothers me when I run or bike to much.

I am sorry about your experiences at Baptist. When I had my last kidney stone and went by ambulance to Baptist, I honestly got more compassionate and timely care by the ambulance EMT's than I did from ANYONE at Baptist. I didn't want those EMT's to leave me!

I had to yell at a nurse down the hall, after waiting for someone to check me in for 30 minutes, that I thought I was going to faint. She was way overworked and hastily tried to tend to me, and was not in my room much. The first pain shot did not work, and I had to wait another thirty minutes for another one.

The doctor was very dismissive and told me after three hours, when my pain was gone, I could go home, without any diagnosis for the cause of my pain. Then the nurse directed me down the hall to the Financial Office where a woman asked me how I wanted to pay. I was by myself, under the influence of painkillers, and I asked, ""How much?" She sneered and said, "A lot." I said, "Send me a bill." And they did, $10,000 for 3 hours of minimal care and one CT scan, with no diagnosis.

My vet clinic gives more compassionate care to my dog.
