Exclamation American West gets some love...
Also, ECU-BYU gets a mention

http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...all-week-5

Quote:The team you should know about, but probably don't: The 'Murica West!

Yeah, that's right, there's an entire conference division you should be watching and it's not in the Power 5. It's the American Athletic Conference -- West (that's how it's officially listed). Are any of these six teams going to win the national championship? In case you didn't notice earlier, three of those remaining 20 undefeateds are in this division alone -- Memphis, Houston and the aforementioned Naval Academy. Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch, all 6-foot-7, 245 pounds of him, has NFL scouts starting to take their first trips to the Liberty Bowl, former Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman has Houston QB Greg Ward Jr. looking like Buckeyes' quarterbacks used to play (121 yards rushing and three TDs by halftime vs. Tulsa) and Navy hits its annual Notre Dame game 4-0. Even the division's worst team, SMU, is suddenly entertaining to watch, thanks to new head coach Chad Morris. Between these teams and fellow unbeaten Temple over in the American East, the race for the Gang of Five's big-stage bowl berth feels likely to be no more complicated than this conference's title chase.

The game you should be psyched for but probably aren't: ECU at BYU (Saturday, 7:30 PM ET, ESPNU)

Speaking of the American Athletic Conference of American Athletics, it took the Pirates a little while to rediscover their sea legs after losing record-setting QB-to-WR combo Shane Carden and Justin Hardy, not to mention their offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, now at Oklahoma. But ECU pushed Virginia Tech around two weekends ago, and its only losses are to undefeated Florida and Navy -- and the Pirates nearly won in The Swamp. BYU's feel-good Tanner Mangum story is still rolling along, with its only losses coming at UCLA, who was a top-10 team then, and at Michigan, who might very well be a top-10 team very soon. Big stakes game? Probably not. Big fun game? Probably so.

If there was a year for a G5 team to slip into the CFP conversation, this would be it. Everyone at the top seems shaky and top 10 teams keep losing games. No P5 team looks like a shoe-in. If P5 champs have 2+ losses, it could get interesting...

Interestingly---Temple has the schedule to do it. If they go undefeated they would have wins over Penn State and national championship contender Notre Dame. Plus wins over several top G5 programs. Couple an undefeated schedule like Temples with enough messiness at the top of the rankings and you might have the recipe for a G5 to slip into the playoff. Not saying its likely---just saying those are the kind of pieces that have to be in place for it to happen. Thus far, that possibility is alive.

I'm telling you, ESPN is really out doing themselves, they look professionals now... Heck, even the lower programs in this league are getting plenty love.

Could we be witnessing the rise of The AAC as the Power 6.

It will be poached before that happens. Of course, it seems Disney is serious about this cost cutting. I could see a scenario where they don't need the higher paid conferences getting more love (and dollars) so they promote the conference with the best TV deal they have in order to devalue others

This really is the most legitimate praise I think ESPN has ever given us. Also pointed out that ECU has only lost to undefeated teams. I had forgotten their game against Florida is the same Florida that just beat Ole Miss and is ranked #11. Funny how at the time it just seemed like a missed opportunity against a *meh* team, but now it looks like they competed with a top SEC team this season. Good on y'all, ECU.

I'm loving this conference this year - if the bottom teams (yes I include Tulane in that category) can continue improving and the rest don't drop off, we could be building something incredible here.

This line also shows respect for the American

Re: Florida
Quote: But they have run the most impressive obstacle course to undefeated with victories over American contender East Carolina, at 4-1 Kentucky, Tennessee and then-No. 3 Ole Miss.

ESPN will say good things about ECU as long as Florida is undefeated because a strong UF is good for their viewer numbers. It's important that their wins look like good ones.

America has tired of Boise now that they're starting to slide and NIU didn't exactly hold their own in their BCS appearance. Could be they want to build up the AAC so whoever the champ ends up being has a better shot at the access bowl.

Speaking of Marshall/CUSA fans, where have they been lately. They used to bombard this board.

Hopefully, AAC can get 4 teams ranked before they start knocking each other off.
