They cover so many events so mistakes are going to happen. They seem to get correct them quickly however. Tutolo is going to be really good for us once he can wrestle at his true weight.

I checked out Sam Wheeler at Cleveland St. He has won his dual meet matches but Cleveland St. has a lot of Baldwin Wallaces and John Carrolls on its schedule. He was so so at the Southern Scuffle. I wonder if him showing up at Cleve St. Had to do with our assistant coach ending up there?

I wouldn't be surprised.

Buckwater had a nice win. It was 25-13 with two overtime losses as we gave two of there ranked wrestlers a pretty tough time. Miller wrenching his knee due to an illegal hold was nerve racking. He was a little gimpy but finished the match and looked OK at the end. I hope nothing shows up tomorrow.

I saw Ohio St.and Michigan St. wrestled Sunday at Walsh high school. I guess Ohio St takes one home duel meet to one of their wrestlers high school every year. I'm sure it was a tough ticket but if I had known I would have been there. It would have been interesting.

It's a great idea, right? They were at Lakewood St Ed last year.

RE: KSU Wrestling 2015 - 2016 - updated roster
Now that the basketball season may be over (how's that for a Friday, Debbie Downer?), let's focus on the next 2 wrestling duals. This weekend, we're on the road at Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa. I think we win 7 or 8 matches against the Huskies and either 5 or 6 against Northern Iowa.

We've owned the Huskies historically, with our only recent loss as the result of horrible officiating in Illinois that had Coach A hopping mad. Although the Huskies are improved, they only have 2 ranked wrestlers, but we have our own studs at those weight classes; Tutolo at 141 (who can wrestle with just about anyone despite being up a class) and Conel at 197 (who is having a great RS freshman campaign).

We are a pretty strong team that can still finish 2nd in the MAC and make an impact at Nationals. I still worry about our 125 and 285 wrestlers. Vinas just doesn't have real strong D1 skills, but I admire him going out every meet and wrestling hard as a 5th year senior. Others might have quit the team (Shuster comes to mind) given the struggles. Suglio is still small for the class but he can't go 197 because of Conel. Nye is also having a good year for a youngster. If Mimmo doesn't come back next year from his injury, I can see Nye being our 285; he's tall and fairly quick.

174 is getting interesting for us with Vollant being pushed out of the picture (perhaps) by James who is only a RS freshman and wrestling up a weight. We won't get a lot of wins or points out of this class, but James will be a good 165 for us next year. Sparkman is a solid back-up to Miller and could be an AA candidate down the road, along with Tutolo and Conel.

Mack (133), DePalma (149), Miller (157), Buckwalter (165) and Baxter (184) remain as our core seniors. These five, (plus Conel, and even Tutolo) can score points for us during tourney time.

Regarding Northern Iowa, they are a much tougher opponent but I think we match up well against them. They win 125 and 285 convincingly. We win 157 and 197 convincingly. We better get bonus points here because NI will probably do so at 125 and 285. We should win at 149 and 184 while they will probably take 165. This gives us a one match edge with 3 remaining. At 133 - Mack is against a tough opponent with similar rank and record. I think this could be the best match-up of the night, and predict Mack getting a tight win. For the last two, we will see what happens... At 141, Tutolo will have his hands full with one of the two good Panther wrestlers. This may end up being similar to the OU dual depending upon what weight they start at. 174 will feature youth and average records. You're guess is as good as mine. It could be really boring or crazy. lol

The dual against NIU is on ESPN3 and Flo Wrestling will have the Northern Iowa matches.

If we win both, we will battle CMU for second behind Mizzou. The Chips have UB and Eastern this week-end and I don't expect them to lose either. We also host Edinboro on Valentine's Day. Bring your significant other to the matches. It's better than roses! lol

RE: KSU Wrestling 2015 - 2016 - updated roster
KSU 21 NIU 12

125 Vinas drops the decision. Was never really in it.
133 Mack wins a close one and needed some injury time after being taken down. He's struggling a bit; hopefully he rights the ship before tournament time.
141 Tutolo drops the decision against a tough opponent. Wrestling up a weight is NOT easy.
149 DePalma with a major decision.
157 Miller time with a tech fall.
165 Buckwalter ekes out the win. He finds more ways to win than anyone on the squad.
174 Vollant loses by decision. 174 is still a struggle.
184 Baxter takes the decision.
197 Conel knocks off another ranked wrestler. Other than Miller, he's our most exciting grappler.
285 Nye loses by decision to a 5th year senior with a sloppy shot that is countered. He'll learn.

RE: KSU Wrestling 2015 - 2016 - updated roster
The matches haven't even started and we're already down 6-0 due to McGuire not wrestling.

Vinas loses by major.
KSU forfeits.
Tutolo with the decision! He rode his opponent for most of the match and the 1 point for riding time was the difference.
DePalma wins with a major.
Miller wins by decision.
10-10 at intermission.
Buckwalter caught a break with his ranked opponent not being able to go due to injury. It's not a forfeit, but he gets the decision for the win.
James gets the start at 174 and wins the decision despite wrestling up a weight with a bad ankle.
Baxter wins in OT!
Conel wins by decision to ice it.
Suglio pushed the 15th ranked wrestler but loses on a late TD.

KSU 22 NI 13

Every KSU weight class wrestled hard and pushed the matches. Both Suglio (285) and Vinas (125) get credit for hanging tough against two very good, ranked opponents. Great win! Hopefully Mack is healthy for CMU and Edinboro.

Remember this Sunday Kent vs. CMU for second place in the MAC. As long as Missouri is in the league that is probably the best we can do. When it comes to wrestling and gymnastics, CMU is as much of a rival as Akron is in other sports. We haven't done well lately in the dual meets so hopefully we can get them this year.

Burden is correct about the rivalry with CMU. They have beat us 16 of the last 18 meetings. With that success, the confidence of the fan base has gotten to the point where they are more obnoxious than OU, and even Akron, basketball fans. This is going to be very competitive and close. Even if you're not a wrestling fan, come out a support the Flashes. Give your significant other The best VD present ever by leaving the house and taking the kids with you! And don't forget to feed them. She'll appreciate it more than roses.

RE: KSU Wrestling 2015 - 2016 - updated roster
Nice match. We finally beat them in a dual and will finish second in the MAC to Missouri. Neither McGuire or Miller wrestled. I assume due to minor injuries that they will have two weeks to heal up before the MAC tournament. When I saw that I was bummed. However Millers replacement Casey Sparkman beat a highly ranked wrestler helping out. A CMU forfeit at 125 also helped (why they didn't just bring a backup to wrestle Vinas is suprising, but that is what they did). In the last match Tutolo was tied 2-2 with about 30 seconds left. He appeared to get a takedown but the ref did not give it to him and the two wrestlers scrambled for about 20 seconds with the CMU wrestler finally getting a take down and a 4 point near pin. Tutolo just avoided a pin that would have given CMU the match. Dangerously close. Finally the CMU fans went quiet.[/i]

Yes! Great win for us. Although the forfeit at 125 gave us 6 points, we wrestled up against 3 Chips for a total of 11 points. Coach A looks brilliant by not forfeiting 133. If he had, the score would have been tied and CMU (I think) would win by tie breaker. The MVP is Sparkman, subbing for Miller. He beat the 11th ranked wrestler at 157 in a wild finish.
