last weeks TCU/Texas Tech had 69 1st downs. So sounds like a lot there....
but-
TD's count as 1st downs. so right there are 14.
7 1st downs came as a result of penalty. So clock is going to stop there no matter what.

So right there 21 of the 69 1st downs are not going to impact things no matter what... That leaves 48. At least 8 of those were where the play ended out of bounds(may have been more but lets go with that). So that leaves 40. I think the avg time the refs are stopping the clock now is about 5 seconds(and even there that may be a bit high). So we are talking about maybe 200 seconds. At the most. It's not a magic thing that is going to save everything like some folks think. And note- this doesn't even include ones where there was a defensive penalty that was declined but obviously would have stopped the clock to process the penalty.

Every little bit helps. You have to try and get time back somewhere.

Yeah, it's really dumb in that it works just as often as it fails. There's no data to suggest that calling a timeout will affect a kicker's poise and concentration. Unless you have inside info that a kicker is psychologically weak, it seems foolish and a waste of everyone's time and as you noted could even backfire, as it nearly did for Floreida against Tennessee last week.

The thing is, I think there's a lot of folks that think that eliminating the stop clock after 1st downs would be some magic tonic that would get game times way down. It wouldn't.

Game times are down by 3 minutes this year. If that continues, we aren't going to see much of a change.
