This year college games are being listed as 3 hours. I think part of this is because of the rise of streaming platforms. It used to be unheard of to channel dump away from a game to start the next one. You can see that more and more now. Running ads on streaming platforms is a little more involved than on a broadcast station but they are getting better and better at it.

I think college bball is slotted for 2 hrs. Same thing though--missing the first couple minutes of a Tigers game waiting for Nebraska v. Rutgers to finish up is routine.

Is that true? I thought they were both 20 minutes but now that you mention it I've never actually looked at the clock at the beginning of half of either.

The NFL halftime, they barely have time to jog back to the locker room and come back out to warm up.

Plus they're out there lining up for the 2nd half kickoff as the time counts off. When it hits zero, they put 15 on the clock and off they go. Usually less than 30 seconds from the halftime 12 ending until 2nd half kickoff.

I wish they'd make some changes to football. It seems very long and drawn out. I'd be in favor of a shorter play clock - like 10-15 seconds. Of course, shortening the frequency and duration of commercials would help the most, but greed won't let that happen.

All that, plus it seemed to me that there was more time spent in commercial break after a score than spent showing game action. In games with so many scores, that's what we'll get I suppose.

I had time to build a blimp in the back yard after every Td.

Still not as bad as the 5-lap breaks in nascar broadcasts tho.

You turn on ESPN2 to the game, and see that there is 10:05 left in the fourth quarter.

Just then, a friend calls and wants to hang out. Do you tell her: "Sure... there is only 10 minutes and five seconds left in the game. I'll leave for your house in 11 minutes."

I would hope not. It will likely take close to 30 minutes before that game is over (and only if it doesn't go into overtime.)

I'm sorry, but I have a major problem with this scenario. If I get a phone call and SHE wants me to come hang out, I'm hitting the record button (and adding extra minutes for OT) and heading to HER house immediately. I obviously rank my priorities different than you, and unattached lonesome females rank above football every time for me. My experience says that women who call that late on a Friday night are looking for more than hanging out.

It's amazing how long the game lasts when the ball is in play for about 11 minutes.

yup, a booty call will beat a Tiger game in any sport at anytime.

Very unscientific, but personally observed by me is the "wake up from my nap" theory. If watching a game almost like clockwork at the beginning of the third quarter I'll catch a doze. When watching a NFL game I find myself waking up near the end of the game or 60 Minutes or something else is on. Wake up during a college game and it is like five minutes left in the third quarter.

The NFL is run on a clock for sure. When you watch RedZone, it's amazing how many games are at about the same point in time in the games around the league.

Of course it does. If instead of finishing the game, you still have 10 minutes of game time left, you will have even more commercials, first downs, penalties, dropped passes, runs out of bounds, and perhaps injuries.

Multiply by 3.

by not stopping the clock you're not adding any time at all. You're reducing the time (non-playing time. game time is still the same). So, no multiplying it by 3 or any such craziness.

Yes, you still multiply by three.

Let's say that two games start at 7:00. Magically, the exact same plays happen in each game, but Game 1 lets the clock run after FDs.

Game 1 uses up a total of 10 minutes of game time prior to each first down, according to our calculations above.

Game 2 will still have 10 minutes left on the game clock when Game 1 ends.

Multiply the game time left by 3, and you will have the time that Game 2 actually ends. If Game 1 ends at 10, then game 2 ends at 10:30.

And a typical 30 minute half in the NFL lasts -- you guessed it -- 90 minutes.

I noticed that, too. Pittsburgh had two long drives to start the game. The NFL doesn't just keep the clock going after first downs, but they start the clock back up after plays out of bounds. Combine that with the two long drives Pittsburgh had, and the clock almost never stopped in the first half.
