Semi-OT: Improving the college application process
Rice is a part of this coalition: http://www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org/. 80 schools so far have signed up. The goal?

Quote:The Coalition is developing a free platform of online tools to streamline the experience of applying to college. The initial iteration of the platform will be available to freshmen, sophomores and juniors in high school beginning in January 2016.

Ran across it in an article that talked about the 4 schools in Virginia participating (source: http://www.richmond.com/news/article_9fd...0e9.html). Not sure if it's going to limit itself to just the application process going online, but it mentions at least some minimum qualifications for the schools to participate. I guess the stated goal in the FAQ kind of answers this.

Quote:The Coalition was formed with the goal of improving the college application process for all students. To move toward that goal, the Coalition is designing and developing a set of online tools that will guide and support students throughout the process of finding a college home.

Wasn't the point of the common app to make it easier? Can't hurt to make it even better though.

The website is vague on the type and amount of information and advice this coalition will give students, and isn't clear whether participating universities share decision-making on which students to admit where.

03-lmfao I doubt that very seriously; they are too competitive! 03-lmfao

Article in Chron indicated that the point was to aid minority students in the application process over a longer period of time; maybe several years of HS. 04-bow

I believe antitrust laws prohibit universities from shared decisionmaking on applicant admissions. If I'm remembering correctly, there was a case involving this very practice among the Ivy League institutions.

That's why I was wondering about specifics. This Coalition seems to border on collusion.

Might you be referring to this legal action against the Ivy League schools and MIT in the early 1990s? http://news.mit.edu/1992/history-0903
