"Some fans could be heard singling out players, and several, including redshirt freshman quarterback Shuler Bentley, have been called out by name in online posts."
This leaves a bad taste with me. Don't think you should be quoting us 10% fans here.

Yeah, Minium, don't you know that internet posts are meant to be private? You shouldn't be publishing our online opinions where they can be read by just anyone.

He didn't.
By not quoting or linking, he sort of lumped all ODU fans into the same boat...a very negative one.

Why don't you engage us then Harry instead of writing snarky articles? Since you are obviously smarter than us low information fans, come on and explain where our analysis is wrong. I have an open mind, but I haven't seen a good defense of anything that happened on Saturday. Yeah skill players and coaches will always get the brunt of the blame. On the other hand, they also get the bulk of the credit when things go well. It cuts both ways.

RE: Open Letter to Harry Minium
I have said on more than one occasion that HM is too close to the program. Example, in addition to this nonsense, why does he write negative articles about our funding (he constantly submits FOIA requests to obtain copies of our funding agreements with other schools...who does that Mickey Mouse type of thing? He doesn't ever report that about other universities). Another example was his 'reporting' on actions of the Virginia General Assembly this past session which insinuated that Old Dominion was planning on building a new stadium on the backs of increases in student fees and so the VGA legislatively put a stop to it. I could go on and on. I thought when Molinaro's workload was cutback that the treatment of the hometown team would improve but it's the same old 'Pilot' negativity.

RE: Open Letter to Harry Minium
I agree with the general assessment that the V-P has an overall negative, snotty, dismissive attitude in its reporting on ODU athletics.
But I don't think that this latest is a fair example of that problem. I was at the game on Saturday. There was vocal booing directed at our team. (You can say now it was meant for the coaches, but there's no way that players can translate the mental intentions of booing fans.). And it is absolutely true that SB (among others) has been called out on these boards. We have an active thread and poll debating the merits of his benching.
I don't happen to have a problem with any of that. As fans, we're entitled to voice our opinions. But denying the existence of patently obvious booing, and of more than a handful of negative comments on this board is unwarranted.

I love the Va. Pilot. The Daily Press is the one that always knocks ODU and always treats us as second rate. Most all articles they write have a negative bent to them and they take every shot they can at ODU. The Teel bias is what I call it. I have no issue with the Va. Pilot.

Harry Minium covers ODU fairly in my opinion. Very rarely is he snarky and negative....definitely no Molinaro! He is prolific in writing articles keeping us informed even during the off season. I wish basketball would be covered that much!
I paid to watch online after the TV mess. The booing was loud and continuous at the end of the first half. As much as they may have deserved to be booed it was very uncomfortable hearing it.
Minium didn't mention which message board nor specific post on specific players. If you rant on a public message board you can't complain when a reporter makes reference to it.
The performance on the field may have brought out the worst of some of us. We have to remember those booing and badmouthing players is reflection all of us. Not saying don't do it but be prepared for maybe some backlash.

I totally agree with you Homselr. Nothing inaccurate or unfair about what HM reported.

Yup it was all true, just one of those ugly truths.

RE: Open Letter to Harry Minium
I don't get this. Does it matter if we single them or not let alone harry reporting this. These are young men attending college and playing football. College should prepare them for their real world life whether its education or life lesson. If you can't take criticism in college how will you suddenly grow balls as soon as you step outside the college and be an adult. I say single them out and call them out when they perform really bad and not for every single small mistake they make sorta like a appetizer for the real world entree. I don't care if Harry or BW has a problem with this.

RE: Open Letter to Harry Minium
I don't get why everyone is so upset... These past 2 weeks we have had a meltdown of sorts on a public forum that anyone can view. I read the article in its entirety and I don't believe what Harry said wasn't a shot, and as gramcracka92 stated, it was all over Facebook as well. We started a new QB poll and some of us were ready to send Shuler to the lowest spot on the bench. In all honesty we began to sound like the Redskins lol. But we can't get mad at that line. He didn't say all or most of the fans, he said some, which is accurate. The QB poll has 22 pages and over 200 posts, and on numerous articles I've seen posted to facebook about last weeks game, Shuler and others were called out. Let's not make a big deal over nothing...

It's not a big deal. It is high level sports. Throw for 350 and 3 TDs next week and beat Marshall and the same people calling to run the kid out of town will be asking him to father their daughter's children. It is the nature of the beast. Personal attacks are off limits. I haven't seen any.

If you dish it out, you better be able to take it. Nothing HM said was snarky. It was simply the truth. He's an excellent reporter doing his job. Be grateful he's so diligent.

RE: Open Letter to Harry Minium
I was at the game, the whole game. Yes there was some booing at the end of the half by some fans. It was a small minority of fans, but it probably sounded louder because the rest of the fans were sitting in stunned silence. I was embarrassed that the team played so poorly for the first half and embarrassed that fans were booing the team. This is a young program that has exceeded almost everyone's expectations to this point. I THINK THEY NEED A LITTLE SLACK WHILE THEY FIGURE THINGS OUT.

I'm thankful for the coverage we get. The VP generally does a good job or us. Thank goodness we aren't GSU, GMU FIU, FAU, MTSU etc. Their papers ignore them more times than not.

I don't remember Harry having an opinion if he liked or disliked players or coaches getting called out. He just pointed out the true fact that it happened.
....kinda like reporters are supposed to do.
