Shells not an American oil company?

That's a really good question. Officially no.

Didn't mean to phrase it as a question, more of a "what the hell are you talking about". And yes, the headquarters are ran out of the Netherlands.

Shells not an American oil company?

It's Royal Dutch Shell.

Everybody who works in or around the oil industry hates Shell with a passion. It's a ****** company from top to bottom.

Well it is about a 400 year old company. Businesses that hang around that long are guaranteed to piss people off.

Mostly it has to do with the restrictions that are placed on U.S. companies that Shell doesn't have to abide by because they aren't American.

It's given those bastards a lot of advantages.

Unfortunately, the feds are considering allowing oil companies to drill off our coast. The prospect is worrisome. I keep thinking of the spill in the Gulf, and the Exxon Valdez ...

Two instances 25 years apart, you seen the problems with Warren Buffet running the stuff all over on his trains? (Hint: why we don't see dims move on piplelines, aside)

Further, you must have never been to the California coast. The land of fruits and nuts.

Oh, and world class surf and oil rigs onshore and just offshore. Rarely have problems.

With proper response tools, even a blowout that bad could have been a minor contained event. There was a study in 1993 or 1994 that addressed what was needed. We still haven't done it. And the BP incident did not prompt us to do it. What does it take? And it's not that expensive to be prepared.

The questions that raise is "who is we" and "who is responsible for paying for it"? If it is the companies in question, then you have to ask if it was cheaper to create that capacity than it was to pay the lawsuits, then why did they not do it? I also have to ask whether or not having that capacity would result in a smaller lawsuit/penalty than it would otherwise. I just wonder sometimes whether putting mitigation measures in place exposes companies to bigger lawsuits or penalties because it demonstrates knowledge of how bad the consequences of an incident could be. Certainly, it should not be that way, but our society likes to put perverse incentives in place.

Good lessons to be learned here, too.

Yes, they are officially Dutch. But there's significant British ownership too. But from an employee, management, and effective currency perspective, they're more American than anything else.

Its kind of like ExxonMobil being officially based in Irving. Some of the higher ups do work there, but many management decisions are made elsewhere and a lot of employees are elsewhere as well.

LOL. I love Shell. Everyone I know does too. They have the reputation of being the best company to work for of all the big energy companies.

Even their trading company isn't a sweatshop.

And they aren't one of my clients. I wish they were. But I have to admit, at least in Houston and in South Alabama, lots of happy employees, customers, and partners.

I'm not aware of much abuse of their employees, ripping off of royalty holders (someone else did that in Alabama), or them having a big problem with OSHA, etc.

The bottom of the barrel companies for me will remain nameless, but one got sued (with merit IMHO) for ripping off their royalty holders for years. The other...frequently moves employees schedules around..."So..we have a new manager..he lives 40 miles outside of town, so he's decided the new start time for the department will be 4am." And they have a well deserved reputation for lying to employees and partners.

Every once in a while a recruiter will call and pitch a job with one of those two. I thank them and laugh and say "I appreciate the difficulty of your job trying to get people to work at ...., but I'm going to be one of the decliners as well"

Shell would be choice number 1 as an employer if I were looking to work for one of the bigs. Better benefits, better working conditions, humane treatment.

It's simply not profitable with how cheap oil is right now. Not sure where the controversy is from.
