You can't make ponies do what you need Clydesdale for. It ain't Thompson's fault the D cupboard is bare. His guys aren't in there or ready to be starter, yet.
That lack of talent argument is not going to work. We are either not recruiting talent or not developing talent. Either way, you can't be last in the nation in scoring defense and 2nd to last in total defense and not be responsible for the bad defensive play. He in the DC of the worst defense in the nation! He is going to get fired at the end of the year. Hopefully, he is just renting.
The talent we had graduated (Mayo, Orakpo, Mager, Odiari, Targun). If you don't have talent to develop you do what you can. Did not the Gay move make you question what the hell they were doing there? and why? We aren't even recruiting heavily on that side of the ball. This is on Fran more than Thompson.
I will grant that something isn't being done but if you check practice reports, I don't think they had the issues that are raising their ugly heads in season. Then again, they practiced against their own team and schemes and knew what was coming at them. The D seems unable to adjust. Talented players adjust.
Our 2 deep sucks. McClarty is in his 3rd year at NT. He was out for the game (groin) so, who did we replace him with? A senior who played in 4 games last year and before that was on the practice squad. Is that depth at that important position?
Gay was out with a hamstring, who did we have in there in his stead? Someone that was beaten out for the position by a RB? Yeah, that works.
Dillon (DT) got hurt in the game, I don't even know who replaced him.
Anyama (1st year player for cripes sake) played injured because....we have no one to step in behind him?
That's not just lack of depth (which Fran said we now had) it's lack of talent. Sometimes you can coach until the cows come home and the talent just isn't there.
Opinions can vary and I'm ok with that.
