RE: Week 4 Football- It's Gameday
and here's the margin of victory/loss for MAC vs G5 in OOC. UMass plays FIU in Wk5 for final OOC game of the season.

+30 (SBC)Ark State @ Toledo
+21 (SBC)La Lafayette v Akron
+19 (MWC)Wyoming @ EMU
+18 (CUSA)FAU v Buffalo
+17 (SBC)Idaho v Ohio
+11 (CUSA)Marshall @ Ohio
+8 (MWC)UNLV @ NIU

-2 (AAC)Temple @ UMass
-3 (AAC)Memphis @ BGSU
-3 (MWC)Nevada @ Buffalo
-4 (AAC)Cincinnati @ Miami
-4 (CUSA)Old Dominion @ EMU
-7 (CUSA)Marshall @ Kent St

-22 (Ind)Army @ EMU
-26 (SBC)Ga Southern v WMU
-42 (CUSA)WKU v Miami

With 1 game left to play the MAC is 7-9 vs G5 OOC competition. What is most frustrating about these results is that the MAC is 0-6 in games decided by 7pts or less, and all of those were home games. Just stealing half of those would change 7-9 to 10-6; big difference. On the plus side, in games decided by 3 or more scores the MAC is 5-3.

Plenty of nice wins, but if the MAC was more clutch it would have been a real banner year with some of those swing games. NIU let 2 get away themselves..

MAC margin of victory and defeat vs P5 opponents:

+21 Maryland v BGSU
+7 Purdue v BGSU
+7 Iowa State v Toledo
+4 (#18)Arkansas v Toledo

-3 Minnesota v Kent St
-3 Minnesota v Ohio
-3 Syracuse v CMU
-3 Boston College vs NIU
-7 (#1)Ohio State v NIU

-11 Oklahoma St @ CMU
-13 Penn State v Buffalo
-13 (#5)Michigan State @ WMU

-17 Pitt v Akron
-20 (#2)Michigan St v CMU
-26 (#1)Ohio State v WMU

-29 (#25)Tennessee v BGSU
-33 (#16)Texas A&M v Ball St
-34 Colorado v UMass
-36 (#6)Notre Dame v UMass
-38 (#19)Oklahoma v Akron
-49 Illinois v Kent State
-58 Wisconsin v Miami

sad.
So nobody outside BGSU and Toledo were able to carry the MAC banner.
Still, I watched quite a few of the games and the teams looked competitive.
Thought CMU's QB looked good against Syracuse.

No MAC team can quite notch that OSU win. NIU was close. Marshall once got close I think. BGSU let one slip away several years ago. Toledo got ripped by the homer refs a few years back.

In games decided by 7pts or less vs FBS OOC opponents the MAC is-

3-6 v P5
0-6 v G5

Edit: updated to include final NWestern v Ball St score

Very frustrating loss for the Cards. Two missed FGs, one missed extra point, and a fumble on the 4 in a five point loss. Could have/should have doesn't mean squat, but really had a lot of opportunities here. Very different game than Iowa last year, but same feeling of giving the game away.

I agree, but the reality is that if we get Toledo or someone else in the G5 Access Bowl hardly anyone will remember our laundry list of close losses. Having one of our own play on New Year's Day puts the MAC in the high life (relatively speaking) in the public eye, even if we've faced plenty of disappointment these past two weeks.

I agree. This data is only useful as inside info for us. It won't change perceptions but it is a good indicator of the strength of our conference for those of us that follow it closely. The close losses are reason for frustration, but also reason for optimism.

Case in point there are a bunch of AAC posters who will swear up and down that the year UCF won that bowl against Baylor was a great year for the AAC as a whole yet if you actually look at that year they had 3 losses to FCS schools, 5 out of 9 teams had losing records and of those 4 of them only had wins against other AAC teams when they did win.

BUt instead of looking at it as a great year for UCF but a bad year on the whole they tout it as being an overall good year.

Correct, but logic is something that the AAC fanboys rarely use......03-razz

EMU is getting run over at home by Army. 03-puke It's now 51-30 with 3:30 left in the game. It's clear that EMU is better on offense this season, but the defense may actually be worse.

I agree about EMU.

Even though our starting QB, Reggie Bell, is hurt (broken jaw) our offense has been pretty good. I'm not sure when Bell will be back, but I hope we use both him and Roback (pro-style QB) in a way which makes it harder for opponents to defend us.

Our defense will continue to make MAC games: "MACtion". No lack of scoring when EMU plays...

Who did you guys lose on defense this year? I know you had your best LB injured. I believe there were others.
