I'd rather find a way to shrink to 12 than expand to 16.

We all know that Banowsky wants to go to 16, and for good reason. It makes for a more compact geography and even divisions at 8 a piece (or 4 pods at 4 a piece). The money is not that much different and it may even help upcoming television negotiations.

That being said, both JMU and Texas State (who is playing Houston) would provide CUSA with good brand names in the heart of each division.

JMU has been waiting for this opportunity. They are ready facilties wise.
Texas State really puts our stamp on Texas (a HUGE state). I think they'd also lock in Rice and UTEP by giving them the best fit for a conference than either of those universities can ever expect to have again. No, its not the SWC but its the next best thing. Both their Presidents recognize that being in a conference with their other Texas peer Universities is what's best for business. Hell, look at Rice's schedule (and note how Texas centric it is).

Both of the above universities are sleeping giants that just need this opportunity.

Now is the time (before GORs agreements in the P5 expire and the dominos start falling again). The MWC is down (look at their record this year). Let's lock the door on Texas so they never even think about trying to get in here.

Realignment board please.

i'm still not a fan of deciding whether or not to invite teams based on one game

I stopped reading at the first sentence here, because it's wrong on a number of levels.

First and foremost, Banowsky at one time wanted 16. That is no longer the case. If this league wanted 16 they could have already done it.

Second, he serves at the pleasure of the Presidents and they all have come to consensus no further expansion is warranted. Plus he's leaving. He will be making no major movements. The TV deal is his last act.

Third to address the "good reason" part of your first sentence lacks awareness on the most pertinent issues. It is a terrible idea to further expand. Any further expansion will erode the per team revenue (which is why the Presidents are in agreement). There isn't anyone that can be added that's going to raise league-wide revenues sufficiently to offset the further division of said revenues.

Lastly, who gives a rats ass if JMU beats SMU. One game will not a program make. I could care less what either one of them do. That game has absolutely no bearing on this conferece -- AT ALL.

Thanks for this post. It should pretty much end the thread.

I don't even understand why CUSA has 14. The revenue given to G5 teams is capped at 12 teams and on top of that I doubt that teams #13 and #14 are kicking up the CUSA media deal enough to justify their per team shares.

The extra teams were insurance against further raids, but realignment settled down right after WKU was added.

What JMU would do is greatly improve the academic profile of CUSA.

They have the academic profile similar to Virginia Tech.

Delaware is the school to get if academics and markets are important.

JMU will say COA will be dependent on FBS.

The 13th & 14th schools were to add Charlotte and Old Dominion to keep East Carolina happy w/ close by rivals.

Had East Carolina left a year earlier Charlotte/ODU additions could have ended up WKU and MTSU.

When ECU & Tulane left for the American I do not know why CUSA decided to immediately backfilled with MTSU/FAU. Then when Tulsa leaves sitting at 13 it made sense to go for WKU to even out the numbers.

CUSA could have been a more regional 12 team conference......

CUSA East: Marshall, ODU, Charlotte, UAB, Georgia State, FIU
CUSA West: Southern Miss, LaTech, UNT, Rice, UTSA, UTEP

Geographically both divisions would have been more cohesive and attractive to market without MTSU/WKU. The SBC then would have lost 2 less schools overall.

SBC West: NMSU, Texas St, ULL, ULM, Arkansas State, USA
SBC East: MTSU, WKU, Troy, Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, FIU

The SBC would never of had to mess around with Coastal and Idaho like they've had to do.

Shouldn't be. NDSU and UND are doing FCOA scholarships with FCS football.

In my opinion, I don't see why FIU and FAU should be in the conference.

While it's true that CUSA had Central Florida from 2005-2012 and before that it had South Florida from 2003-2004 (football), I don't see why that necessitates maintaining something in that state.

It could be a 12 member league with four in Texas + LT, USM & UAB, WKU & MTSU and three in Mid-Atlantic.

I know Marshall is very keen on having Florida representation because of their recruiting there, and they're probably not alone. Plus it's a large, fast-growing state in their footprint. They're not going to cede it to the American AND the Sun Belt.

The last highest football playing schools in Florida not at the FBS level are Jacksonville, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Florida Tech and soon West Florida. They are all in large cities. If North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast adds football? They might get a fast track to FBS.

Oops, I forgot Stetson.

It shouldn't, but that doesn't mean it won't. If C-USA loses one, then I'd rather go back to 14 then stay at 13. At this point, there are very few expansion candidates who provide enough upside to justify going back to 14 if two more teams leave. Schools like Ark State, ULL, and Texas State make the most sense. I don't see any real interest in JMU, Delaware, or UMASS. Adding NIU or Ohio doesn't make much sense for either side, a lot of extra travel and little revenue to pay for it.

Fair enough.

If the AAC loses two, I can only assume they'll keep coming back to that CUSA well.

Say they lose Memphis and Cincy to the XII. Would they take UAB and Marshall?
