To fix this defense there are two things that have to be understood. 1. Our DB's don't understand or are too inexperienced to play the zone. We were rushing three and dropping right and still were getting burned. 2. Our DL is not very good. So how do I propose the defense be fixed. Well I'm glad you asked.

1. You have to really simply this defense to mainly man with a small bit of zone. We should do that until these kids fully understand the zone.

2. Secondly with our DL not being very good we're gonna have to manufacture pressure with blitzes and just live with the consequences.

If you look at out defense last night we were at out best when we played man defense and we blitzed the QB. I think theirs one thing we can all agree on is the defense that we say last night was sickening and we're not going to a big time bowl unless it improves.

I don't think people respect how good Terry Redden and Martin Ifedi were to last years defense. We don't have anybody capable of replacing either guy right now. I think Gentry will eventually be equal to or better than Redden, but he's only a true freshman right now and he came in way overweight. We still need to find a rush end though. If he's on the team right now I'm not sure who he is. Right now we are going to have to send extra guys to put pressure on the QB and leaving guys one on one in coverage presents another set of problems but it is probably our best option right now. The one positive out of the defense last night was in the red zone.

Ifedi missed so many games. We did great without him. I think it's that we're only sending three and the secondary can't cover.

Odom used to blitz so much on third down. We're not doing much of anything.

We miss Harris and Jakes more than Redden or Ifedi

Our defensive line rarely beats anyone on a first move and then still can't get off blocks after that. I agree we need to send more. Dropping 7-8 doesn't help because the qb has an indefinite amount of time and someone will always get open in 7-8 seconds

Few times we did blitz we brought a player from outside and then someone else has to move up and take their man on the routes. Left a hot route wide open each time. Maybe need to move JD around and put him as an up rush end on some plays. Then bring someone from the inside instead of off the boundary each time. Or maybe drop an end when we bring a guy from the boundary.

I wish we'd incorporate some of the 3-4 zone blitzes into our scheme that Pittsburgh used under Dick LeBeau. I HATED/HATE Pittsburgh...but my hat is off to that team's 3-4 defense.

Every player mentioned was very important to last years defense. Charles Harris' leadership can't be replaced. I wish his background was in the field I need because I would hire the kid in a minute. He is one of the best young men I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and is going to be a success in life. Having a Bobby McCain that could lock down one receiver helped too. When I mentioned Redden I'm getting that from multiple coaches including the head coach. They all talk about how important he was to the success of last years defense. Him occupying two offensive lineman keeping them off of our linebackers played a huge part in the success of Tank Jakes. The defense was good early but it got better when Ifedi came back. We miss them all.

I just a fan, but if we are giving up big plays with a prevent style defense, then we might as well blitz more often and perhaps put pressure on the quarterback.

Those outside blitzes were too slow as well
