I suppose, but then John Kennedy wouldn't sniff the current democratic nomination, so there's that.
That's an excellent point. What has happened in the last 50 years that has made our country so polarized?
the secular movement.

See I would have said the Civil Rights Movement.

Interesting that you would think of the Civil Rights movement as racist.
That speaks volumes.

I don't see it as a problem, evidently you do as we are talking about what caused the country to be so polarized and you answered "the Civil Rights Movement".
In fact my response is a confirmation that I don't see race as a problem, but rather a lack of God.

Just curious -- do you believe in separation of church and state?

I do, but separation of church and state does not mean that the Christian principles on which this country was founded need be discouraged or eliminated from government or politicians running for office should be judged strictly on the religious beliefs.
The original use of the phrase was meant to be an assurance that the state would not interfere with the church, not the other way around. The two clauses in the Constitution most frequently associated with the phrase place limitations on the government passing laws regarding to religious freedom and expression. Unfortunately today it is most commonly used incorrectly to mean that the church, or religion, must stay out of the state's business.
As long as the state doesn't establish an 'official' religion or restrict the lawful expression of religious beliefs, there is no conflict with the original intent of the Constitution.

I would say the primary system that replaced the situation where party bosses picked the candidates. In the older system the focus of the party bosses was on electability, which meant candidates who leaned generally to the center.
There are many reasons to prefer the primary system--but nomination and election of more extreme candidates on both sides, has clearly led the country away from the center.

But it's not just the Presidents that have divided our country, what about Congress?

Members of congress
1. Are also nominated through primary system, and primaries at district/state level are probably more extreme than weighted average of all primaries at national level.
2. In many areas, follow the lead of the president, either favoring the guy from their party or opposing the guy from the other party.

It was easy to notice that most of those on the stage had only a wobbly grasp of who Reagan actually was or what he actually did. No mention of Reagan the Raiser of Taxes. Or Reagan the Creator of Massive Deficits. Nary a word about Reagan, Denier of HIV/AIDS. Reagan, who left office almost 30 years ago, has become a blank screen onto which Republican politicians can project almost anything they like. No mention either that Reagan's approval ratings when he rode off into the sunset were under 50 percent.
