Still doesn't make what I said untrue. People will overlook a lot of stuff as long as the W's are plentiful.

I still don't fully understand what Al Davis saw in him.

Considering some of the people hired or drafted by Al Davis in his waning years, and those he fired or traded for, Kiffin may not even crack the top ten of head scratching moves.

Al Davis' viewpoint had altered considerably in the time between.

He'll enter the race for President next. And inexplicably win that too.

Considering the voting public's track record throughout the life of this nation to date, that wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Lane still has his job - I'm calling this whole story a bluff.

Oh, I get firing him. That's pretty straightforward. I just don't get why Al felt the need to make USC's QB coach the HC of the Raiders.

Someone that Davis could control and wouldn't talk back or challenge Davis' authority.

This.

Kiffin's reputation is well-deserved and I share the general bafflement over his career-trajectory. But he has -- by hook or by crook -- finally landed at a spot that is actually a good match for his abilities. Being OC under Saban, with recruiting responsibility for the West Coast really does make sense for him.

I would have done that for half the price.

ESPN College Football Countdown covered this story. Finebaum seems to be sticking up for Kiffin.

Not knowing a damn thing about college football or about where Kiffin's happy parts have or haven't been, I'm posting my prediction(guess)

The rumor(s) were started by discontented 'Bama fans who want Saban to fire Kiffin. (And are probably false).

Al Davis was always a huge USC fan, probably thought that anyone who worked for Carroll there would be a good hire. And of course Al liked to make unconventional coaching hires and player acquisitions, because he thought they would all succeed and everyone would praise Al for making a genius hire. Al first offered the Raiders job to Sark, who turned it down before Kiffin got it.

Right. There's liking a program and being crazy, and there "screw it. Let's hire the QB coach and make him an NFL HC crazy."

I also get the USC was QB U under Pete, but it's still insane in my mind.

I think Kiffin could still be fired if Alabama loses 2 to 3 more games.

Depends. If Alabama scores 37 points per game in those losses (as occurred vs. Ole Miss) then it won't be the OC that people are whining about.

More generally, Nick Saban is 100% secure in his position and will not be pressured into firing any of his staff-members or assistants unless he, personally, wants them to be gone.

I think Kiffin could still be fired if Alabama loses 2 to 3 more games.

Which frankly is boring compared to things like poisoning trees, or misspelled tattoos, or other Clay Travis fodder from the "85%". Any big-time program would have speculation of the high-profile, well-travelled, controversial OC being fired after the offense doesn't perform and the team loses games.

Not many fanbases would, with a Lane Kiffin type underperforming, start rumors that he's sleeping with the coach's daughter to get the OC fired. I don't know that's what happened, but I do know that NOBODY would be surprised.

("Nobody" is too strong. It would (will?) surprise people who don't know Alabama fans. I'll say it won't surprise anybody who knows who has more national titles, Alabama or Georgia.)
