Yup, will almost assuredly be a Top 100 high school prospect by the time he's a Senior, but will likely matriculate given the family heritage at Rice (not to mention that the family is not in desperate need for the signing bonus).

(I feel old every time I think about how I played baseball at Rice with the father of a current player, so I understand where you are coming from)
+1 I laughed at that.
Wait until it's your daughter
Very, very unlikely my daughter will play baseball at Rice with the father of a current player.

RE: Owls get another Cruz
Great signing!! I coached Jose Enrique in LL at Westbury LL and Cheo was an assistant coach! Nice family and he was quite demanding of his then 10 year old son. My wife speaks Spanish fluently and would translate some of his "comments" after the game. We sure won a lot of games because Jose Enrique covered the entire infield from SS and got a hit every at bat! He was GREAT as a 10 year old and had a great career at RICE!!

I'm in the old guy club too. I watched Jose play for the Astros, and watched him coaching Cheito from the stands at Rice... and I remember Jose's nephew (? I think) Victor, who played for Rice in the '80s.

Episcopal coach believe he has strongest team yet
Indeed!
Quote:Matt Fox claimed four consecutive Southwest Preparatory Conference titles from 2010-13 as Episcopal's head baseball coach, so he's seen his share of outstanding teams.
But the current Knights might be Fox's most-gifted group yet, which doesn't bode well for the rest of the SPC.
"We graduated only one senior ... . Everyone else is back," Fox said. "We also added what I consider the best high school shortstop in the country."
Fox was referring to junior Trei Cruz, the grandson of Houston Astros legend Jose Cruz Sr. and the son of former Rice University All-American Jose Cruz Jr. The younger Cruz, who transferred to Episcopal from Westminster Christian in Palmetto Bay, Florida, has already verbally committed to Rice, where his father and uncle, Enrique, both starred.
"Every day Trei comes up with plays that leave you speechless," Fox said. "He is a truly a phenom."

Yikes, just heard a whole bunch of Episcopal players may have been suspended/booted. Might change their chances if so, and I certainly pray that Cruz is not on that list!

Can't decide if I like that the quoted blurb on Jose Cruz Jr focuses on his Rice pedigree/success or dislike that it doesn't mention his 12-year MLB career and Gold Glove. I guess there are just too many positives to fit into so few words.
