All but two of their MAC wins were by more than 2 TD margins.

They came into the MACC over-confident and the Broncos built up a 23 point lead in Huntington. But of course we choked it away. 03-puke

That was my Sophomore year at Marshall and what I still consider my most favorite game I've witnessed in person. Pennington to Pinkerton.

Beat Penn State 24-6 and Marshall 42-0.

2000 Toledo team? They didn't even win the MAC. Did they even win the West? Didn't WMU? I was at that game vs Toledo. I've never witnessed such pissy aggression from fans that was the game where the old lady told me to F-off in the concession stand line. Same game where many Marshall's fans vehicle were vandalized in the parking garage to include my own. Lots of built up aggression released that day. I think it was 35-0 at the half?

Lost 21-14 to WMU. Thats it. Went 10-1 fell out of the top 25 after bowl season because we were left out. Smoked everyone on the schedule basically. One slip up. Just because we had a conference loss doesnt mean a 10-1 team couldnt be in the conversation. Like i said. We beat the MAC champ 42-0.

Chuck Ealey and his 35-0 Rockets might beg to differ.

Maybe but Miami's schedule in 2003 was significantly tougher than Toledo's in those three seasons. The MAC was essentially 1-AA back then. I think they only beat one team in those three years that currently is FBS. Huge accomplishment by Toledo but I think Miami was a better team and their waxing of Louisville was much more impressive than bowl wins over Davidson, William & Mary and Richmond.

Chuck Ealey's Rockets had 8 players go in the NFL Draft. DT Mel Long was a 1rst Team All-American AP. Ealey, who didn't get drafted but went to the CFL and was MVP, is the best QB the MAC has ever seen. Ealey was better than Toledo's Gene Swick. Swick is the only First All American at QB the MAC has ever had . Gene was 1rst Team UPI and 3rd Team AP. He also was the winner of the Sammy Baugh Award.

Great Toledo teams - no question. However, there is really no comparison here to the 1973-1975 Miami teams - go back and analyze the players, the schedules, and the accomplishments, especially against Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina in the Tangerine Bowls - for all-time, there is no better set of teams in MAC history than those Miami teams.

You play the schedule you have. No way to tell which team might have won a face-off. your analysis and mine might differ. Both were great teams- UT puthe MAC on the map. Miami kep it there.

I think it was the BSU game that was really close and ended up being wide because BSU had a couple pick 6's at the end or whatever. I think they also struggled with Akron or another pretty bad team.

That's why many fans think the 2010 NIU team was better than the 2013 team. With the exception of WMU, from Game 4 (Minnesota) up to the MACC, NIU pretty much smashed everybody they played. The average margin of victory over those 9 games was 30 points.

All ruined by a couple of freak plays in the MACC...

One has to wonder if Haywood would've still been hired at Pitt if he had lost that game (or one of the many close games that year). Probably yes since going from 1-11 to 8-5 and a division title is still going to get on someone's radar, but you never know.

IMO our coach had already checked out and his head was already in Minnesota so that didn't help. Boucher played a really nice game at QB though. I was like, who needs Dysert? I also think that 2010 team was better than the 2013 team.

RE: Best MAC teams in recent memory?
Sure was an incredible run for the MAC in the early to mid 70's with UT and Miami. I was fortuante enough to be at Miami during some of those glory years. The irony is that the MAC was thinking that with the MU and UT success, the conference might start landing a bigger bowl game (and there were so few in those days).

The agreement with the Tangerine Bowl ended after Miami beat So. Carolina in 1975....Miami was pres-season ranked #17 by Sports Illustrated for 1976 (first time ever for a MAC school), and then promptly had our key running back hurt (Rob Carpenter) and ended up with a disasterous season, going 3-8. Really hurt the conferenece' "mojo" and the MAC champ didn't see a bowl game until the Cal Bowl was set up a few years later. Miami came back with a 10-1 record in 1977...didn't get a sniff of a bowl game.

RE: Best MAC teams in recent memory?
One last comment about those Miami teams of the mid 70's....the interesting thing is that they were not passing teams at all, and in fact used an option running attack and absolutely dominated Florida, Georgia and S. Carolina in those games by controlling the clock and having a stout defense.....if you ever check out the stats you'd see that Florida could hardly move the ball at all against MU...we hardly even threw a pass in that game. the 73 and 74 teams were both in the top 5 in the country in points alllowed.

Here are those rushing stats from the 3 Tangerine Bowl wins:

'73: MU: 239 yards, FL: 90
'74: MU: 228 yards, Georgia: 74
'75: MU: 238 yards: So. Carolina 56 yards with 40 rushing attempts

Pretty incredible when you think of it.... Miami DL and OL that absolutely dominated SEC teams.

Quote:2003 Miami - Finished season #10 in both polls after destroying Louisville in their bowl.

I would put them over Ball State's greatest year. BSU wasn't ranked terribly high going into that MACC game (#16?). 2003 was the year of the MAC. Much tougher schedule than BSU's that year.

I said last 10 years if you were referring to the 2008 BSU team. They were #12 IIRC heading into that UB game for the MACC.

Yeah, they were... they really shot up there. I had to look that up. I remember it took them forever to even get ranked. When they were getting up in the rankings, Hoke got giddy about getting the San Diego St job and left them hanging. Evil bastard.

I Just found this out: Battle for the Bronze Stalk. Ball State and NIU have this "thang" between them, starting in 2008. The Indiana vs Illinois MAC schools. Interesting.

Quote:Designed by nationally recognized sculptor and DeKalb artist Renee Bemis, the trophy depicts several cornstalks in tribute to the prevalence of maize around the respective home states of the rivals.

The first meeting between the two occurred in 1941, a 6–6 tie; the all-time series is tied at 20–20–2, with the NIU Huskies winning 13 of the last 16 meetings.
