I believe that part of that slashing of football spending was a result of overemphasising basketball after Bartow's 1973 championship game. Some of our big boosters had SEC football loyalties and gladly contributed to basketball, but football, not so much - Memphis was beginning to win too many football games vs the SEC.
Absolutely. I will always believe this was the leftover cabal that had as much, or more, to do with keeping Memphis out of the SEC as any school. That whole we need to be independent "like Notre Dame" was the biggest con in school history. And, unfortunately a lot of us bought into it.
Until Fuentes proves otherwise Coach Williamson was the best we ever had. As has been said, he did more with less.
