Lots of video breaking down Rice's scheme and previewing the game.

Great introduction...

Quote:Their star Defensive End from last year left early for a six-figure energy career, their Offensive Tackle can solve a rubix cube in twenty seconds, and they've run the ball over UT and A&M's blue chips for 200+ yards the last three seasons. This is Rice Owls football and it's headed to Waco this Saturday.

All they were missing was "Their star Defensive Tackle was drafted by the Texans in the 6th round". But yes great introduction and analysis.

Omitting the nfl draftee grabs the attention a bit more when the UT and A&M bit hits IMO.

How does this hold up compared to how Owl fans see the team?

I think it's quite complementary and generally spot on. I think many of us have lamented the lack of sophistication in the passing game, which as you note, relies on recruiting better athletes, especially TEs going against CUSA safeties and backers... but we've struggled more against team that we can't simply 'out-athlete'. Unfortunately, Baylor is probably one of those teams. Now, Baylor's strength is obviously their offense, so MAYBE we can do better than we have at times in the past... but having said that, Baylor's strength is going against our weakness... the one on one deep ball.

Save the turnovers and even WITH the big plays we gave up, we're 'in the game' against UT because of the run game and the scrambling/elusiveness/toughness of Driphus.... but he has forced some balls and they took CLEAR advantage. I would 'assume' that Baylor is as good as UT on defense... but if we don't make those mistakes, maybe we're in the game offensively.

But with our inexperience on defense and your passing, I don't know that we can keep up/stop you from scoring.

Frankly, I'm not sure I wouldn't do more trickery... onsides kicks etc... because whether Baylor starts on their 20 or at midfield, I think the probability of scoring isn't much different... I'd like to see that stat. I WONDER if Baylor is actually worse inside the red zone than outside against a team like ours.... at least when you adjust for the other factors that go into those plays. There's one more deep defender (the end line). Play zone... keep it in front of you... lots of hands up at the LOS.

Onside kick is very interesting. A quick search looks like 25% success in NCAA. I would definitely want to play like we have 4 downs anytime we get past our 40. If we did that against UT we probably would've won.

I'd want someone to look at the stats, but I feel like our weakness is more likely simply being beaten over the top... and when you have 80 yards to cover, that's a tall order. It's actually easier when you only have 30. The onside kick gives you a shot at the ball while probably not giving up much in terms of their ability to score quickly. They aren't (generically) a 7+ play drive team.

I'd think Baylor more dangerous on 3rd and 15 from the 50 than 3rd and 15 from the 20. The shorter field negates some of the speed. It's the ultimate epitome of bend, don't break. Zone until they're inside the 30, then go aggressive man... of course, I'd defer to the stats and the coaches... but that concept (and result) wouldn't surprise me at all.
