Not much comment on Jameso Vest but he's been the surprise of the year for me. When JD was a freshman I recall coaches not really showing confidence in him past 40 yards. Vest has picked up where one of our all-time greats left off. Tha 44 harder had a good five extra yards and he's at, or near, the top and f the MAC in every kicking stat.

Agreed. Coach found a good one. And he's getting plenty of attempts early in the season. He is from Georgia, though, so let's see his he does kicking up here in November.

RE: Vest
He's been outstanding so far. Already has 7 FGs, and is 2-2 at >40 yards.

Detmer had 5 as a Freshman. Casano kicked them all most of the season, with JD brought in later in the year. As I recall, even then Casano still kicked the shorter ones, and JD was brought in for the longer ones. Stats say JD attempted 4 out of his 6 tries from >40 yards. Casano's tries were almost all <40.

The moment the staff gave the "green light" for the 44 yard field goal I realized how much faith the staff has in Vest. Kickers are the ultimate game proven/tested players. They easily are recognized if they produce or seen as goats if the choke. No hiding in the kicking positions.

Jameson Vest is a damn good pick-up for UT.

Vest was a high school QB too. I expect a few trick plays sometime during his UT career.

RE: Vest
When they were playing the time-out game at the end of half, I was hoping they'd consider trying the long FG just to see if they could pull it off.

I think all of special teams has been exceptional. Kick-offs aren't particularly long so I think they've adjust to go high and give the players time to get down-field. McKissik made a great read to get that TD, that's going to happen.

Our kickoff depth is very poor. Most are around the 10 yard line, and at some point this is going to cost us. I'm going to assume that if Vest could do better he would have the job.

It seemed to me that our kickoffs were deeper in both the Stony Brook and Iowa State games, though--including some into the end zone. Wind?

Hopefully they've gained more confidence in him. No more punting from the 33 yard line!

Rode was blowing them thru the EZ against Stony Brooke.

Wind out of the north was brutal earlier in the game even though flags were barely moving on the field. I was even more impressed by their kicker keeping that one punt at the 2, thought for sure the wind would carry it into the stands.

I thought the shorter kick-offs might have been a strategy since the Rockets were having some trouble containing their kick-off returner. I thought that maybe the shorter kicks forced their returner to come up to get the ball around the 10, which made it harder for him to pick up steam after catching the ball and also allowed the coverage team the opportunity to surround him a bit quicker.

After the shorter kicks ASU usually had decent starting field position around the 25-30, but there were no more long returns. Its just something that crossed my mind after I noticed the shorter kick-offs.

Yeah, kick it into the end zone and they'll take the ball at the 25. Kick it off with a little more hang time where they have to field it between the goal line and the 5, and most of the time they're not getting to the 25 against our KO return team.

RE: Vest
some coaches are great recruiters, and some are great being able to evaluate talent. Coach Campbell so far is a very good recruiter and ability to evaluate talent. Vest among others is an example why he will be successful where ever he coaches.

Yes, almost kicking into a 10 mph wind. On McKissic's TD, I thought the
Rockets starting to lose focus and got sloppy in coverage. Having Vest
on coverage might lead to a serious injury.
