Yes, but true football fans go to the football game as their first choice venue. So it says North Carolina does not have true and loyal football fan base. 07-coffee3

Yeah, but y'all already knew that. North Carolina IS a basketball-first state, and there's no shame in that.

UNC long ago put its eggs (all of them!) in the men's basketball basket. It is what it is

Duke, as Lumberpack, has pointed out numerous times, shot itself in the "football" foot with an 800 SAT rule. Cutcliffe is like Moses trying to lead Duke out of the wilderness, but it is what it is.

NC State doesn't know if it wants to be a men's basketball school or a football school, BUT they do have an awesome tailgating atmosphere so there's that.

It is what it is. All we ask FSU and Clemson to do is be the football flagships, and don't screw ---- up.

Are you advocating the uniform pictured? I prefer what they wear this year.

UNC could easily be 3-0. That's what matters to me. Coastal division on high alert!

If you have to blame those embarrassing crowd shots on fans that chose a beer festival or fishing derby or a book club over going to a football game...come on. It's not freaking Las Vegas or NYC, I think people can manage to carve out a few hours a few times a year if they give the slightest of a damn. The problem is they don't.

"Other options" is the lamest possible excuse...if your fans don't choose a game over a Tiffany cover band at the local mall or whatever...they aren't fans. And that's the problem.

It's hilarious that the "too much else to do" used to be the hallmark of teams in Miami and LA...now we see it hauled out for Durham, Syracuse, etc...lol.

I'm not even an attendance whore...in some ways it's pretty overrated. I don't think there is that much meaningful difference between 48k one place and 60k another, or 92k vs 80k somewhere else. And I think there are a lot of reasons in the modern game (stupid game times, 6 day options, 4 hour games, etc) that I don't blame fans for staying home more than they used to.

But 15k for a game...there's no way to dress that up. That's terrible football support, and why anyone that claims that ACC football has any higher ceiling than middle of the P5 is kidding themselves.

There is no excuse. Alum, friends of the program, etc will point to several things. Other options, NCAA mess, firing of Butch Davis, product on the field, Fedora, old alumni, no place for tailgating, etc. None of that stuff matters because if you are a fan of UNC, you should support the program with your attendance. The attendance for the Illini game was a disgrace. And although I understand the game time argument (noon is not a great time), there are students and locals who certainly could have come.

The administration needs to do something. Also, I know that after the NCAA mess, a large chunk of alum are boycotting.

Now, for all the fans of other programs commenting about attendance at UNC, I hope we see packed stadiums as well. No excuses, right? There have been several comments made by some fan bases claiming opponent is a reason for their lack of attendance. "We are in the ACC... who wants to see Cuse, Wake, etc". There should be no excuses for the lack of fan support at your stadiums as well because you guys are true football fans.

When Mack was at UNC they didn't seem to have trouble drawing a crowd. Perhaps UNC is much like Kentucky and Indiana when it comes to football...Just something to do until basketball starts.

Don't really follow Duke football so don't know what to say about fans not coming out to see Coach Cut's team.

A comment from a Clemson fan I talked to last week was interesting. He said Louisville fans were a lot like NC State fans. Both have won National Titles in basketball; Both seem to care more about football than other programs that have had success in basketball.

I know its taken us over 30 years to build a good core group of football fans and we still have a long way to go. If our season continues like it is our stadium may look a lot like those pictures. I hope not. I hope we are beyond that. A percentage of our fan base shows up for football and another percentage for the party. As long as the party is good we should be OK.

I really don't buy the "basketball first" state thing. My high football team had great attendance and although it did not compare to Moultrie, GA, Northern certainly had a great football culture. Independence, Mallard Creek, Fayetteville schools, etc all have good football culture. UNC certainly had great attendance during Dick Crum era, Mack Brown era and Butch Davis. Win, and I am sure the attendance will get better. Winning cures everything.

I believe, unlike Chicago Cubs fans, UNC fans are just so feed up with the sleeping giant moniker and missteps. Now, it is a wait and see approach. The administration has messed up so many times with regard to getting the football program on track, that people just want back it without proof of life.

Two Saturdays ago all 3 teams had home football games at EXACTLY the same time. How stupid is that? UNC seats 63k for football. NC State is about 57k. Duke is about 33k. So you're talking about almost 150k capacity for football in the same area of the state.

Second, UNC's parking situation is atrocious. The stadium is in the middle of campus and shares a parking lot with the hospital. However, there have been times in the past where fans showed up. Right now empty seats have a lot to do with the product on the field. I firmly believe if this team starts winning again, then the attendance will be better.

What a pathetic excuse.

In a state of 10 million people, in which almost everybody (Asheville, Charlotte, Triad, eastern NC) lives less than 4 hours from the triangle.

LOL, in North Carolina drinking craft beer and getting lit with friend and going to a football game gets second billing to drinking craft beer and getting lit with friends and not having to go to a football game. That about sums it up.

This conference will never get anything nationally in football out of UNC, UVA, Duke, Syracuse, Pitt, Wake, BC. You might get one top ten year out of those schools every 20 years if you have a senior laden team and a hot coach in his last year before taking a new job. 50% of the conference has a near zero chance of being nationally relevant.

That makes for an incredibly low ceiling for the conference.

But this is just bitching for the sake of bitching. Everybody with any sense of history and eyes in their head understands that, its just a matter of if there is anything to be done about it.

10 million residents. Let me say that again since it's falling on deaf ears.

FSU and UF alone out-attendance you three and the Tallahassee and Gainesville metros are like 600k combined. It's 4 hours from Orlando and Tampa to FSU. It's well over 5 hours to ft Myers, Palm beach, ft Lauderdale, Miami...

Don't tell me there's more to do in NC than in Florida. Don't tell me fans in Florida have easier access to games than NC.

Then tell me somewhere else this exists. 3 FBS programs 30 mins apart. 150k capacity for football seating.

120k capacity
TCU-SMU-UNT

Dallas-Forth Worth area is much larger than the triangle area of NC.

Second, all 3 triangle schools play in major conferences

Three, that's still a 30-40k difference in attendance capacity.
