Unsafe nippert report on fox19
Supposedly some whistleblowers on welding issues making the new structure unsafe? Just caught the tail end of the promo, son not exactly sure what it said. The tone off the voiceover and background music made it seem like some Watergate level conspiracy, but fox19 is pretty much the joke of local news shows....so take that for what it's worth. Anyone know what this is about?

Not sure about welding but last weekend we noticed the concrete contractor may have some issues to address...the patio, landing and walking areas on the outdoor of the 3rd and 4th floors on the SW end of the new structure were already really cracked...looked like bad driveway work.

This sounds like more of a union protest.

A section of corner glass underneath the President's suite looked like it was shattered (or perhaps it was condensation - it was hard to tell).

And there was a big crack in the concrete wall at the end of the seating section there too.

With most new buildings like this, it will be under "warranty" for a few months. They will get it fixed, but the settling of the building will be fixed from the contractor. Some of this is to be expected.

“UC knows I was welding on it. Turner knew I was welding on it. Merit knows I was welding on it. That’s what we were there to do: miscellaneous steel was all welding, nothing bolted,”

What the hell?

That may or may not be true. If true, under the assumption Merit had certified welders. It seems Merit used false certificates.

UC is a victim here. They, the client, paid a company for a service that wasn't delivered as promised. In addition, UC also arranged to have a third party inspect the structure for this specifically after the info came to light. The university has done everything within reason to ensure the facility's safety, so I can't imagine UC would have to pay for any additional work. That should fall on the contractors and/or subcontractors.

UC's ass is covered, so that's one thing we don't have to worry about in this debacle.

Doesn't the city/county also have to inspect new construction and sign off on it?

I guess that is true as long as nobody from UC had anything to do with falsifying forms or approving something that should not have been approved.
