A better question is what neighborhood was this vehicle stop administered? Was this a drug traffic or gang area?
Also when an officer is tailing you at 11 o'clock at night, he is looking for numerous things. First he is looking for something to administer a vehicle stop like swerving in the lanes, obtaining a plate and running it though the system, checking the background of the registered owner. Is the registered owner a female and the driver is male? etc etc
I wonder. If a cop was tailing you and you simply stopped and parked your car, what would the cop do in response?
He can simply say you pressed your brake too fast, did not use turn signal, parked in an unauthorized parking spot, pull over with you to see if you were ok. There's numerous things a cop could do. It's almost endless.
At the end of the day, you are the batter and the cop is the pitcher. He can throw an inside pitch whenever he wants.
As in the movie "Field of Dreams", don't wink at the pitcher or he'll come back with a fast ball high and inside!
Yes but I know my rights and if he wants to pitch it inside, I'm going to hit it right back at him.

and based on your earlier questions about what the officer could and couldnt do, I would guess you know a little less about your rights than you think.

You shouldn't feel intimidated by a cop doing his job.

Quite honestly I don't know that I can answer that in simple enough terms for you to understand. Evidently you have no idea what it means for a cop to be on patrol, nor the comprehension required to understand that there are virtually limitless reasons a cop can give you for tailing or pulling you over that are completely legal and within his rights as an officer.

So eye contact is a legit reason to tail someone? Really?

Depends.... I'm sure as a teacher you have had a dislike for the way a student looked at you and recognized fear of being caught in their eyes. To me its certainly reason for a cop to run your tags and try to find another reason to stop you.

I could see tailing you long enough to run the tags but if they come back clear, what's the point other than intimidation.

What if they don't come back clean? What if you have a tail light out? What if your window tint it too dark? What if your muffler is dragging the ground? What if your car matches the description of one used in a crime? What if you match the description of a suspect they don't have a name for?
Why not just assume the cop is doing his job instead of trying to intimidate you?

If any of those things happen then pull me over and do whatever it is you have to do. But if not, leave me the frack alone and go mooch some free coffee at the corner store.
