RE: This Week In Schadenfreude -- Week 3
The most Schadenfreude play of the season quite possibly with Alabama/Ole Miss. Wow.

So Alabama 34 San Diego St 27 Final
MWC now 1-8 so far this week. The 1 win was vs Boise St. Going to be real tough for Boise to get the G5 bid IMO with how bad that conference is.

Toledo just beat Iowa State. They now have wins over two P5 teams. G5 bowl contender?

Maybe.
MWC now 1-9. And Utah is beating Fresno. So far this year- MWC is 2-20 vs FBS teams. Worst in FBS.

MAC is legit this year. Very impressive for a bunch of of AD's that operate AD's for 20-30 million. Central Michigan almost got Cuse today as well. NIU played a heck of a game. The list goes on.

So, basically, we already put the kibosh on the annual "Demise of the MAC" discussions? I got lots of chuckles in the past over CUSA backers being all high and mighty about who they could pick off from such an obviously inferior conference...

Furman is not a surprise. They have beaten FBS schools in the past.

Ole Miss. is blowing Alabama out of the water. 43-24
MWC schools lost several games close. Utah State and Colorado State had close loses. Nevada gave a scare to Texas A&M for a bit. Air Force was not that bad either. It would be among those 3 and Boise State to win the conference. It could come down to Boise State and Nevada or Hawaii in the west for the CCG.

eventually though w-l matters. 2-20 vs FBS teams as a conference isn't good. They're going to have 3 teams after tonight with 1 loss.

And there goes BYU's mojo. It's going to be an uphill battle for them even at 11-1 to make an access bowl.

All I can say now is Hotty Freakin' Toddy!!!! Extremely tough win but I'll take it -- first time in Ole Miss history for the Rebels to beat Alabama in consecutive seasons and only the second win ever in Tuscaloosa.

Except for established powers, usually the way this works is that a team may win 2-3 OOC games against major teams only to slip up and lose 2-4 games in conference.
I can't think of a single mid-major that has done that and actually come close to surviving to the access bowl except Boise, Utah and TCU, two of which have graduated and one of which would have with better academics and geography.

Jesus Bleeping Christ, haven't they been playing for a very, very long time, for over a century? It's not exactly UCF-USF or FAU-FIU. That's a long streak of futility, like Vandy (not) winning the conference, Clemson basketball never winning at UNC or Navy against Notre Dame.

It's not quite as bad as it sounds. For reasons unknown to me Mississippi and Alabama decided they didn't want to play each other for a long time. They played once from 1934 to 1964 then met in the Sugar bowl in 1965 and have played almost yearly since.

For most of the SEC's existence, the SEC only played six conference games, despite having as many as 13 members (Sewanee, Georgia Tech, Tulane). Alabama and Auburn didn't meet at all for several decades. The SEC schedule as we know it now didn't come about until Arkansas and South Carolina joined the league.
