When will Miami get it turned around?
It's sad, but this is the worst Miami team I can recall. They've looked not only outmanned, but the scary thing is they look poorly coached. You can forgive a bad season if the team looks like they are learning and improving.

Maybe they can turn it around still this season. They may not win, but at least they could show more promise.

RE: When will Miami get it turned around?
This isn't nearly as bad as 2013. At least we won the opener and made it a very close game against UC, 2013 had nothing besides the first half at Marshall. Some of our current mistakes are inexcusable though, and I really wonder what some of our coaches are teaching these kids. It's not that hard to tell players not to run into the kick returner.

I think a lot of our weaknesses last year were covered up by Hendrix at QB and the fact we had an experienced team. Those seniors, who weren't good to begin with, are gone and now we have to go through growing pains against a much improved MAC. We end with games against UB, EMU, Akron, and UMass, that should really tell us where we stand.

NIU helped them scores some points too on the dumbest safety I've ever seen and then for the 2nd straight week we had an opposing teams punt hit one of our players from behind and the opposition recovered. Dumb mistakes.

Miami is still searching for a bottom and the NIU game may have been it. Their D looked terrible. Fornunately D is easier to turn around. They played a Fr Qb for the future and their rebuild continues. Wait for 2017 for respecability. Its a LONG journey. Patience.

We are starting to lose a little patience....I guess I was overly optimistic but I was impressed with what I saw in Martin and really thought we would see an improved product on the field this year........not so much.

Ancient history here from a 1978 Miami grad, but from end of WWII to 1976, Miami did not have one losing season. That's something like 30 years plus!

Now it's the new norm.

To me it seemed like someone at Miami purposely destroyed that program. Not invest in the facilities and under pay coaches etc...etc... But it has CHANGED facilities are on the up swing - have a good coach and its still a great school. Patience.

RE: When will Miami get it turned around?
Not really accurate....we had a couple of really bad coaching hires who were mostly responsible for the debacle.

As for funding, it would be correct to note that we see a lot of financial emphasis on our hockey program which has taken away some of the past emphasis on hoops and football, but I think we've been investing in facilities overall. The hockey area built a few years ago cost $32, and in the past decade we've built a new away side at Yager stadium, added the Cradle of Coach's plaza with new videoboard and field turf. In the early 2000's a new baseball (and moreo recently a new softball) stadium were built, and is being upgraded already with new locker rooms, etc.

More recently, we had a major capital campaign under the direction of our relatively new AD Dave Sayler, resulting in upgrades to the Millett Hall (new seating, lighting, playing floor, etc.), a new IPF (already completed) which cost $13MM, and next year a new endzone facility is going up at Yager whcih will house conditioning, coaching and training rooms, etc.). This will cost $20MM with one Miami family (Gunlocks already pledging $6MM towards it.

In short, I think that there may have been a lull in spending on football/hoops from 2005-2012, but other than that time period I think Miami has spent quite a bit on facilities, given the limited financial resources that challenges all MAC programs.

We were paying Montgomery $125K for pulling double duty as HC and OC, even ten years ago that was unacceptable. That's all on Brad Bates, he had a chance to capitalize on our Big Ben success and squandered it.

I think it affected basketball to a greater degree. While fan support is sorely lacking for football now, at least we get decent crowds a few times per year and the underlying interest is there. On the other hand, nobody gives a s*** about our basketball program anymore. Bates had Coles play pay game after pay game to pay for the rest of the athletic department while their budget and assistant salaries shrank in favor of hockey, that was true destruction. I think we can get back to where we were in football (winning record every season, close to 20K butts in the seats most games), but I'm not so sure for basketball (frequent post-season bids, average of over 5K per game) because of hockey.

L&H: You make some very good points about salaries, etc. I was more referring to facilities in my response to NIU05.
