Marshall to play both Michael Birdsong and true FR QB Chase Litton on Sunday
Here's the audio from the press conference, which came out like 20 minutes ago.

EDIT: Ugh, I of course meant on Saturday. My mistake.

They want to ease Litton into live action. But yes, Birdsong will probably just become solely a backup after a couple more games. Litton is by far the more talented kid. Matter of fact, I've heard Doc myself say that Litton has as much raw talent as any QB he's ever been around. Those are some pretty strong words considering Doc has coached and been around guys like Phillip Rivers, Tim Tebow, Rakeem Cato etc.

07-coffee3 You Marshall fans really are something. All offseason you predict no drop off from Cato to Birdsong. Now the true freshmen is basically a college hall of fame guy before he sees the field.

I didn't see anyone predict that. Most Marshall fans were hoping Birdsong would be a decent game manager...

The loudest Marshall fans on here insisted zero drop off from Cato to Birdsong and this seasons edition of Marshall would have more talent than last year...At least 5 or 6 fans told us that would be the case this past off season...We were told by the same posters over and over again Marshall has the beat talent and would be the best team again this season in CUSA...Its early so that might still be the case but you cannot win against anyone in FBS with shaky QB play, that was my point during this off season..I know that is not the majority, but I only remember the outlandish statements I read this off season...

Most marshall fans on here were dogging ODU for saying birdsong sucked. That he sat out a year under Cato and the team would be better this year than last. (A lot of marshall fans were saying that)

First of all, you wont find anywhere that I said there wouldn't be any drop off from Cato to Birdsong.

Second....those comments about Litton didn't come from me. That came from Doc.

Does he? He made Birdsong the starter and is now giving up on him after 2 weeks.

False.

That's like saying all you CUSA fans are whiny birches.

Maybe we should fire Doc & Hamrick. Go ahead and fire D'Antoni to just for the hell of it.

I will say some of your most obnoxious and loudest posters thumping their chests all off season are nowhere near to be found now...At least the other guy who was pimping Marshall undefeated and in Peach Bowl is still around and posts and continues to say outlandish statements, haha...Will give him credit for not giving up, after all it is a long season...

I still stand by my comment. I think we do have the talent to win CUSA.....IF we can find the right QB. All of you posters are scoffing at Ohio, but let me tell you something. That was a veteran team with a veteran QB, OL and DL. Our running game wasn't bad, but we couldn't pass the ball... If we can fix that, we can contend if not win CUSA.

What I am saying is in no way attempting to disparage the talent that WKU, LT, MTSU, FAU, or FIU has. But I think too many of you underestimate this Ohio team.

If any Marshall fan thought we wouldn't have a drop off from Cato, at least short term? They are delusional. Birdsong has been disappointing for sure. Time to see what the young kid can do and prep for the future. I do think Litton will be another solid QB for the Herd and fans will have him up there with Pennington, Leftwich, Cato and others before he is done. He certainly has the size and skill set.

We heard that this offseason about Birdsong from some of the Marshall fans.

Hate to say 'Told you so', but ODU fans have been saying Birdsong wasn't good for a while now.

From what I understand, Birdsong looks good in practice, but fails to deliver when the lights come on. I think that Doc was hoping that Birdsong would be as good as he has been in practice and save Litton's redshirt. Purdue made it seem like he could do that. Then Ohio happened. I don't think Doc made the wrong decision to start Birdsong, and I don't think he is making the wrong decision now to put Litton in and let him grab the job.

I also will say many Marshall fans thought Birdsong was more talented than Cato. I thought they were nuts, and so did Doc who stated numerous times last year that people don't know what we are going to be missing when Cato is out of here.

Sometimes you have to be an outsider to see that and step away from tinted glasses....I know WKU is going to suck without Doughty next season 03-banghead03-banghead

It's just one of those things that almost always happens unless you get super lucky (like Marshall has done before). Guys like that don't come along that often and I myself have been guilty of thinking we wouldn't see a drop off. When Chase Clement left, we had an Alabama transfer coming in and I thought we'd just keep on going, but that special quality isn't immediately replaceable. I've heard it from UTSA fans and Soza, ODU fans with Heinicke (less so), UH fans with Keenum and now Marshall fans with Cato. I'm sure we'll see a bit of a drop off next year too when Driphus leaves even though our offense is very run-heavy. WKU too, as noted.
