RE: Athlon SoCon basketball projections
Again, Furman gets buried.

They provide an interesting problem: they were so bad through most of last season, 5-13 in conference. Surely you can't predict such a team being more than middling in conference, right?

But then they rose up in the tournament to beat UTC, beat Mercer and come within 3 of beating Wofford despite losing their top front court player, Kris Acox. And they bring back everybody. So how can you rate that team BEHIND UTC (which lost its coach and its only really good ballhandler on a squad with serious turnover problems) BEHIND Mercer (which lost its top 3 players) and BEHIND Wofford (which lost its top 2 players)?

Which do you credit more: the season of work, or the smashing finish when it counted most? Clearly, the rankers are going with the season.

But do these rankers realize that Furman featured 4 freshmen averaging over 20 minutes a game, who may well make the improvement in play that often happens between freshman and sophomore years? The strong finish may reflect an improving freshman core, rather than a mere hot streak. Those freshmen are nicely balanced with upper class leadership from Senior guard Stephen Croone, Senior post Kendric Ferrara and Junior forward Kris Acox. It's this core of young players that makes me believe that it's more likely that Furman will be as good as their finish rather than as bad as their earlier season.

It's interesting that even ETSU, with all its unknowns, is getting more love than Furman in this poll.

I think that I'd rather have A.J. than Stephen Croone or Tevon Saddler on this list, and maybe a couple of others.

It is kind of hard to pick an all conference player from the ETSU squad, when we really don't know how big a role players will have on their own squad with all the changes that are being made.

STOMP ON UTC's THROAT.

And let's replace Casey Jones and Justin Tuoyo with AJ Merriweather and Peter Jurkin in doing so.
