RE: Week 3 vs. NC State
I expect them to load the box, and on any thing that looks close to being a passing down, I expect them to bring a blitz. We have a freshman quarterback, and they are going to put pressure on him any and every way they can. This is going to be SB's time to show us what he's got.

My feelings exactly. 3rd and long for us could be scary.

RE: Week 3 vs. NC State
I wasn't trying to say the pistol was a gimmick but what I meant was the pistol with Pascal at H-back was new and I would have thought new stuff would have been saved for NC State. After all we did not run it vs EMU so I would have thought we would have saved it for someone other than Norfolk State. I know they have seen other teams run it but it would have been unexpected from us.

FWIW, it could certainly just be smoke for future games. FCS games are a good time to run sets you won't run against anyone else. It puts it on tape and makes the opposition prepare for something you might not ever run.
Our rival in high school used to run the swinging gate just few random times a season. Did that stop us from wasting a lot of time in practice on stopping it? Nope. Gotta be prepared for everything.

RE: Week 3 vs. NC State
Our offensive line certainly will not be bullied, they are some big boys.
I'd be VERY surprised, however, if they aren't running into 7 and 8 man boxes all day.
It might be smart to go 4 wide with Lawry in the backfield and just try to spread them out and run against a dime or Nickle defense.
And if they leave our guys open outside to stop the run, beat them with bubble screens and wr screens/slants.
Our wr's are strong enough to go over the middle. Bentley will have to be accurate though.
It's going to be a very tough game to win.

Probably no need
NC State has an excellent pass oriented defense already, and very good P5 caliber dbs . I wouldn't expect them to modify their 4-2-5 (nickle), even on obvious passing downs, which hopefully we mix up so it won't be so obvious.
I don't think they fear our passing game.
If anything they may make adjustments to deal with our run and stack the box, but for that they won't blitz.
NC State 45, ODU 24
The Wolfpack has an NFL caliber QB, but it COULD be a lot closer and even a win if our running game works well.

Hickory in Chesapeake ran the single wing, wing t and swinging gate crap back in the early 00s with the Brown brothers.

I just do not want it to turn out like the Marshall game last year, or the UNC game the year before.

The running game seems to work they just need better blocking. The way we saw Pascal being converted to tailback I wouldn't be surprised if they took a guy off the bench and converted him to a fullback or Tight End. The run/pass/QB run option could really help us. I can almost 100% guarantee you they have designed some plays just for NC State that we have not seen yet.

Isn't this how we started last year's game against NCST?

I'd like to see SB under center. These shotgun run plays, even in the pistol, sometimes take too long to develop. I think SB needs more experience to elevate his level of threat in the passing game for the shotgun to reach its potential.

That was the Vanderbilt game iirc.

So the fans are supposed to wear white on Saturday, and the team is wearing all blue while NC State wears white. Is this like MTSU all over again?

Agree. NCST linemen are quick and strong. Running plays attacking them must be quick and direct to catch them out of position.

Not really. ODU requested that MTSU wear their white jerseys for our game, and I don't remember hearing that we made the same request of NCST.

Damn. The only game I'll be able to attend this year and I can't even wear my blue Heinicke jersey!

RE: Week 3 vs. NC State
Quotes from Raleigh media today:
CB Justin Burris: "Last year we came out and we took them (ODU) lightly and they hung 34 points on us. We're not taking ODU lightly at all. We've got to go in there with the mentality that we're going to put them away early."
Burris also said ODU has "some pretty good receivers and a good QB."
Coach Dave Doeren said ODU's offense has been "pretty vanilla" so far and he expects new wrinkles from the Monarchs.
You can go to http://www.gopack.com, watch the Dave Doeren TV show from last Sunday, the last 6 minutes are devoted to the upcoming ODU game.
I'll be listening to his radio show tomorrow from 7 to 8.
