End of an era
Canale's Grocery has closed. The "Home of the Ham" is no more. Sad day in Memphis culinary history. So simple. So good. I may shed a tear.

When did that happen? I just went by there Friday and it looked open to me.

I knew something was wrong when they ran out of non-ethanol 93.
Sad day.

Today was the last day. I would take the Canale family over the Tiller family in the badass Memphis family battle royale. No close third.

Oh, man, those ham sandwiches were good. I used to stop there on my way back from taking my daughter to horseback lessons. It was "out in the country."

I am truly saddened by this. Anyone have the inside scoop as to why they closed? I was just there on Friday the 11th. I ate there all the time, as someone else said, I loved the simplicity of the place. Their ham was awesome. Plus, they sold Sundrop! I am now looking for a similar type place to get a coldcut sandwich on white bread. I wish I could have told Mr. Conn goodbye, he was always very nice to me. 03-weeping03-weeping 03-weeping 03-weeping

Trivia...Charlie Vergos sold ham sandwiches before he sold BBQ. My understanding is that he gave them the idea and the ham "recipe." It was nothing more then cheap boneless hams rubbed with dry rub and smoked. White bread, American cheese, mayo and fresh lettuce and tomato.

There is a story in the CA explaining why they closed.

Catholic plays CBHS this year. First time in decades. It was once a great rivalry. Could be ugly this year.

He was my cousin, great guy, great athlete.

4 posts in 11 years? Damn son, you're a man of few words. There's another Catholic alum here.

One of the last Terriers present and accounted for.

BTW, my football teams went 2-1 against the evil brothers.

I'm a CBHS 60s grad and had no idea they didn't play anymore. Back in the day it was The Game.

My dad graduated from Catholic in 67 or 68. I graduated from CBC/CBHS in 90. Don't think we have played since the 1970's.
